Multiscale mechanics of yttria film formation during plasma spray coating

Youngoh Kim et al.

Summary: The study presented a multiscale analysis method integrating DSMC and MD simulation to understand the plasma spray coating process of YNPs on an alumina substrate. The results revealed the correlation between powder feed rate, spray distance, and the microstructure of the films, shedding light on the chemo-mechanical behavior and adhesion mechanisms in sprayed ceramic coatings.

Relationship between microstructure and bonding strength of yttria-stabilized zirconia thermal barrier coatings

Can Chen et al.

Summary: Yttria-stabilized zirconia coatings were prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying, and their bonding strength was determined by the proportion of columnar grains and porosity. Higher proportion of columnar grains leads to higher bonding strength, while the presence of small grains reduces bonding strength. Additionally, both holes and cracks in pores linearly affect bonding strength, with holes having the greatest impact.

Thermal ablation mechanism of polyimide reinforced with POSS under atomic oxygen bombardment

Youngoh Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ablation resistance of PI/POSS nanocomposites by examining the physicochemical changes in the POSS cage structure. The behavior of the inorganic nanocage constituting POSS hybrids at the molecular level provides new insights for the design of ablative thermal protection systems.

Properties of alumina coatings prepared on silica-based ceramic substrate by plasma spraying and sol-gel dipping methods

Zhiping Pan et al.

Summary: Silica-based ceramic cores are used in manufacturing turbine blades, but reactions with active metals in superalloys can reduce their quality. Alumina coatings prepared using plasma spraying and sol-gel dipping methods were compared, with the former showing peeling at high temperatures and the latter demonstrating improved performance. The alumina coating effectively prevented interfacial reactions between the superalloy and the silica-based substrate during casting.

Numerical Analysis of stress evolution in thermal barrier coating system during two-stage growth of heterogeneous oxide

Pengfei Liu et al.

Summary: The growth of inner mixed oxide (MO) in the thermal barrier coating systems significantly affects the stress evolution during high-temperature oxidation and can lead to higher thermal mismatch stress after cooling down, increasing the risk of TBC failure in heavy-duty gas turbines.

Silica deposition treatment of 2024 aluminum alloy for improved coating adhesion

Tetsuo Yasuoka et al.

Summary: The ITRO treatment is a flame treatment process that deposits silica, providing a clean and cost-effective alternative for aircraft coatings. Evaluation of the adhesion strength of aircraft coatings on aluminum alloy surfaces revealed that the silica deposit layer is the weakest link in the coated test pieces.

Influence of glass contact induced changes in surface composition of Pt, PtIr and Ir protective coatings on glass adhesion

Aparna Saksena et al.

Summary: The study investigates the previously overlooked influence of glass contact-induced changes in surface composition of Pt, PtIr and Ir protective coatings on glass adhesion. It shows that an increase in Pt concentration leads to an increase in macroscopic glass adhesion, while IrO2 can inhibit glass adhesion.
