Critical Role of Order-Disorder Behavior in Perovskite Ferroelectric KNbO3

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of local atomic configuration and macroscopic electrical properties of KNbO3, revealing different displacement mechanisms of Nb and K atoms in the octahedron and the impact of temperature on the order-disorder behavior of Nb atoms. The high dielectric constant and enhanced piezoelectricity at the orthorhombic-tetragonal phase boundary of KNbO3 are attributed to the Nb's order-disorder behavior and the introduction of a tetragonal structure, emphasizing the significance of tetragonal structure in developing high piezoelectricity in inorganic perovskite ferroelectrics.
