Experimental method and thermodynamic model for competitive adsorption between polycarboxylate comb copolymers

Stefanie Anne Weckwerth et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method to demonstrate competitive adsorption between polycarboxylate ether (PCE) molecules of different molecular structures. By analyzing a fundamental thermodynamic model, the research reveals the impact of dispersity in charge and backbone length on the adsorption behavior of PCEs, contributing to a deeper understanding of the molecular-level working mechanism of PCEs.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of PCE on cement hydration at different temperatures and finds that PCE can delay the hydration reaction of cement at high temperatures, which is different from the formation of polymer aggregates at 23 degrees Celsius.

Force field for calcium sulfate minerals to predict structural, hydration, and interfacial properties

Ratan K. Mishra et al.

Summary: The article introduces an atomistic force field for all calcium sulfate phases that performs well in reproducing a wide range of experimental data and outperforms prior force fields and DFT methods. It provides new insights into (hkl) cleavage energies, water interface dynamics, and crystal-facet specific hydration and solubility, showing impressive agreement between computed and experimentally measured hydration energies.

Assessing the effect of alkanolamine grinding aids in limestone calcined clay cements hydration

Franco Zunino et al.

Summary: The addition of TEA, TIPA, and DEIPA enhances the aluminate reaction in cement, promoting hydration and improving pore structure and mechanical properties of the cement. The reaction rate of metakaolin is not affected by the addition of TEA, regardless of the iron content in the clay.

Effectiveness of PCE superplasticizers in calcined clay blended cements

Ran Li et al.

Summary: This study found that using calcined clay in composite cements significantly increases water demand, while PCE superplasticizers have a significant impact on flow properties. The research suggests that commercially available PCE products can effectively improve the flow performance of OPC/CC blended cements.

Early performances of cement paste in the presence of triethanolamine: Rheology, setting and microstructural development

Zichen Lu et al.

Summary: The impact of triethanolamine (TEA) on the early performance of cement paste is closely related to its dosage, with low dosage retarding setting and microstructural development while increasing flowability of fresh paste. Higher dosages accelerate reactions and lead to flash setting, with the importance of ferric phase highlighted.

Impact of triethanolamine on the sulfate balance of Portland cements with mixed sulfate carriers

Tamino Hirsch et al.

Summary: The research investigated the hydration of Portland cements with different sulfate carriers in the presence of triethanolamine (TEA), finding that a mixture of sulfate carriers can cause stronger hydration retardation, likely due to rapid formation and depletion of sulfate carriers. TEA was found to disrupt the balance between sulfate carriers and aluminate-containing clinker phases, with the amount and type of sulfate carriers in the cement affecting the TEA-related retardation of hydration.

Effect of different sulphate carriers on Portland cement hydration in the presence of triethanolamine

Tamino Hirsch et al.

Summary: The hydration of cements containing different sulphate carriers, namely gypsum, hemihydrate, and anhydrite, was investigated with and without triethanolamine. The presence of triethanolamine significantly affects the hydration process by increasing the initial dissolution of aluminates, leading to an increase in aluminium species in solution, and substantial retardation of C3S hydration. Hemihydrate can suppress this impact due to its high dissolution rate.

Electronic-structure methods for materials design

Nicola Marzari et al.

Summary: Simulations, using electronic-structure methods such as density functional theory, have driven a new paradigm in research by accelerating the identification, characterization, and optimization of materials. The accuracy and efficiency of these methods rely on the predictive accuracy of underlying physical descriptions and the ability to capture system complexity. Continuous progress in theory, algorithms, and hardware, along with the adaptation of tools from computer science, play a key role in advancing materials science.

Working Mechanisms and Design Principles of Comb-like Polycarboxylate Ether Superplasticizers in Cement Hydration: Quantitative Insights for a Series of Well-Defined Copolymers

Ali Javadi et al.

Summary: Research has identified quantitative correlations between the structure of PCE copolymers and their adsorption onto cement pastes, as well as their impact on properties such as conductivity and hydration process of cement. The study also found that the ionic character of the polymer backbone and the length of non-ionic PEG side chains play a role in the flow properties of cement pastes and the water-to-cement ratio necessary for processing. This new understanding provides insights into the rational design of polymer additives for cement.
