Stability of hydrotalcite (Mg-Al layered double hydroxide) in presence of different anions

Ellina Bernard et al.

Summary: Experimental observation showed that MgO in cementitious materials precipitates as poorly crystalline hydrotalcite, but the lack of consistent thermodynamic data for hydrotalcite makes geochemical modelling challenging. Synthesizing hydrotalcites with different anions indicated varying levels of crystallinity. The stability of hydrotalcite structure with temperature was found to depend on the incorporated anion.

Investigation of aluminum nitrate as a set retarder of magnesium potassium phosphate cement: Mechanisms involved in diluted suspension

Celine Cau Dit Coumes et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of aluminum nitrate on the hydration process of magnesium potassium phosphate (MKP) cement through experiments and thermodynamic modeling. The ways in which aluminum nitrate delayed cement hydration were identified, affecting the precipitation of hydration products. The modeled phase development matched well with experimental findings.

Influence of sodium nitrate on the phases formed in the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O system

Ellina Bernard et al.

Summary: The presence of sodium nitrate in the reactions led to the formation of hydrotalcite-like phases and possibly hydrated alumino-silicate gel containing sodium. These minor phases limited the aluminum uptake by magnesium silicate hydrate at higher aluminum contents.

Effect of temperature curing on properties and hydration of wollastonite blended magnesium potassium phosphate cements

Biwan Xu et al.

Summary: The study shows that hydration of MKP cement at 50 degrees Celsius leads to the gradual decomposition of K-struvite, but the addition of wollastonite can significantly slow down this process, maintaining the strength of the cement. The products formed from the reaction with wollastonite contribute to the good strength of the cement at both 20 and 50 degrees Celsius.

Early age hydration and application of blended magnesium potassium phosphate cements for reduced corrosion of reactive metals

Laura J. Gardner et al.

Summary: The study found that Magnesium potassium phosphate cements (MKPC) can effectively retard the corrosion of reactive uranium metal. Optimized formulations of MKPC with low water content, fly ash (FA) and blast furnace slag (BFS) showed good fluidity, strength and phase assemblage. In-situ time resolved synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction revealed that the inclusion of BFS delayed the formation of Struvite-K, and MKPC systems have the potential application in limiting uranium corrosion rates.

Development of a stoichiometric magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKPC) for the immobilization of powdered minerals

Summary: The study developed a formulation of MKPC paste for hazardous waste immobilization, improving its properties by adding powdered waste. It found that the expansion phenomenon in the paste was caused by a pH gradient and sedimentation of MgO particles.
