Atomic structure and phase assemblages in novel M-(N)-A-S-H materials

Matthew Bedeaux et al.

Summary: This study investigates the atomic structure and phase assemblages of new sodium-stabilized magnesium aluminosilicate hydrate (M-(N)-A-S-H) cementitious binders. Results show that Mg2+ promotes a unique atomic structure in the absence of Ca2+, with Si-Al tetrahedral sheets and octahedral Mg sheets. XRD analysis demonstrates the formation of zeolites and Mg-Al layered double hydroxide phases. TGA results indicate that M-(N)-A-S-H possesses chemically bound water and hydroxyl units.

Spatial zonation of a hydrotalcite-like phase in the inner product of slag: New insights into the hydration mechanism

Bo Li et al.

Summary: The nano-structural evolution of inner products of ground granulated blast furnace slag in blended cement was studied at various ages, revealing a spatial zonation of different hydration product regions. The zonation of inner hydration products explains the multi-rim features of slag grains at very late ages, with the lack of pore space hindering the complete dissolution of slag. Diffusion of dissolved ions and pore space play key roles in forming the spatial zonation of inner hydration products.
