Pedotransfer functions for estimating soil hydraulic properties from saturation to dryness

Rudiyanto et al.

Summary: This study introduces neuroFX, a suite of PTFs developed for estimating soil hydraulic curves based on the FXW model. It offers an uncertainty estimate of hydraulic parameters and outperformed existing PTFs such as ROSETTA and BW in predicting soil water retention and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity curves.

Digital mapping of the soil thickness of loess deposits over a calcareous bedrock in central France

Songchao Chen et al.

Summary: The study tested the prediction of loess thickness (TOL) by coupling a large soil dataset and environmental covariates. Using recursive feature elimination for variable selection and quantile regression forests for spatial modeling, the models showed good performance with reasonable prediction uncertainty. Airborne gamma-ray radiometric data and Sentinel 2 products were identified as important variables for the prediction of TOL.

Digital soil mapping and assessment for Australia and beyond: A propitious future

Ross Searle et al.

Summary: Digital Soil Mapping and Assessment (DSMA) has progressed to large-scale implementation capturing quantitative measures of soil attributes and functions, and is seen as a fundamental approach and essential tool for responding to sustainability challenges in an uncertain world. The theory, tools, and technology of DSMA are expected to grow significantly, leading to tracking and forecasting a wider range of soil attributes and functions globally. Public-private partnerships will play a widening and deepening role in the development and application of DSMA.

Updating the Australian digital soil texture mapping (Part 2*): spatial modelling of merged field and lab measurements

Brendan Malone et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new method to convert field-measured soil texture categories into quantitative estimates of clay, silt, and sand fractions, with a focus on updating Australian national soil coverages. Through machine learning, the approach predicts soil texture fractions at different depths and addresses uncertainties in the conversion process. The results show improvements in predictive accuracy compared to existing mapping products, highlighting the importance of continually revisiting and updating digital soil maps with evolving methods and efficiencies.
