Factors controlling the spatial variability of soil aggregates and associated organic carbon across a semi-humid watershed

Pingping Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial variability and main controls of soil aggregate fractions and associated SOC contents in a semi-humid watershed in the Loess Plateau, China. The results showed that soil texture and vegetation dynamics were important factors influencing the spatial variability of soil aggregates and SOC contents. Grassland had the highest potential for SOC sequestration.

Asymmetrical warming of growing/non-growing season increases soil respiration during growing season in an alpine meadow

Gang Fu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that asymmetrical warming has a lagging effect on soil respiration in alpine regions, with a greater warming during the non-growing season potentially having a stronger impact on Rs than a greater warming during the growing season. The inter-annual variation of Rs may be greater than the warming effect in alpine meadows.

Precipitation dominates the transpiration of both the economic forest (Malus pumila) and ecological forest (Robinia pseudoacacia) on the Loess Plateau after about 15 years of water depletion in deep soil

Wenjie Wu et al.

Summary: This study examined the soil water consumption characteristics of two exotic tree species in a semi-arid region of the Loess Plateau, revealing that rapid deep soil desiccation can lead to a lack of sustainable root water uptake and precipitation dominance in transpiration. Such understanding is crucial for sustainable afforestation in similar hydrogeological regions.

Factors controlling spatial variation in soil aggregate stability in a semi-humid watershed

Pingping Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that soil intrinsic properties, primarily soil texture and organic carbon content, were the main controls on soil aggregate stability variation in the watershed. Topographic attributes, mainly wetness index and altitude, also played important roles in influencing soil aggregate stability. Soil texture and organic carbon content primarily affected SAS at the 0-10 cm depth, while NDVI and wetness index had a greater influence at the 10-20 cm depth.

Comparison of fine root biomass and soil organic carbon stock between exotic and native mangrove

Yasong Zhang et al.

Summary: Despite having higher vegetation and fine root biomass, the exotic Sonneratia apetala does not significantly increase soil organic carbon storage compared to native mangroves. Lower C:N ratio and soil salinity in S. apetala can promote fine root decomposition rate, offsetting the carbon accumulation advantage related to higher fine root biomass. Restoration of mangrove is effective in enhancing soil carbon stock, but the use of exotic S. apetala should be decreased or avoided, especially in Natural Reserves.
