Temperature-dependent brittle-ductile transition of α-graphyne nanotubes under uniaxial tension

Cun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the tensile properties of alpha-graphyne nanotubes (alpha-GNTs) at different temperatures using reactive molecular dynamics method. A temperature-dependent brittle-ductile transition phenomenon was observed, with alpha-GNTs exhibiting either brittle or ductile behavior based on temperature. The ultimate strain showed a non-monotonic relationship with temperature, decreasing initially then increasing. The mechanism behind this transition was attributed to thermal activation energy-controlled microstructure evolution, leading to recombination of atomic structures beyond a critical temperature. Temperature was also found to influence other physical parameters of alpha-GNTs.

Technical review: Improvement of mechanical properties and suitability towards armor applications - Alumina composites

Saravanan Vanal Krishnan et al.

Summary: Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) are lightweight, cost-efficient, high strength materials that have played a significant role in the development of personnel armors. Recent research has focused on new methodologies for reinforcing Alumina (Al2O3) CMCs, focusing on mechanical properties, armor applications, and upcoming trends in reinforcement. The studies have consolidated important inferences for concluding reasonably on the reinforcement of Al2O3 CMCs for armor applications.

Carbon nanothreads enable remarkable enhancement in the thermal conductivity of polyethylene

Haifei Zhan et al.

Summary: Based on molecular dynamics simulations, this study found that the axial thermal conductivity of PE nanocomposites increases linearly with the content of regularly aligned NTH fillers, while the aggregated pattern suppresses the enhancement effect. Randomly dispersed NTHs hinder heat transfer, and surface functionalization has an adverse effect due to additional voids.
