Mechanism of graphene oxide laser reduction at ambient conditions: Experimental and ReaxFF study

N. D. Orekhov et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple, efficient, and environmentally friendly method for reducing graphene oxide (GO) is proposed through experimental and computational analysis. The results demonstrate that high-quality GO reduction can be achieved at ambient conditions through ultrafast heating using nanosecond infrared laser irradiation, which is an interplay between combustion and defect annealing processes.

Carbon under pressure

Bertil Sundqvist

Summary: The physical properties and structural transformations of various solid carbon allotropes under high pressure experiments were reviewed, revealing similarities and differences in high pressure behavior and evolution. Despite extensive experimental work, few new structural allotropes were identified and most carbon materials convert into diamond at high temperature and pressure.

Extended Defects in Graphene and Their Contribution to the Excess Specific Heat at High Temperatures

M. Kondrin et al.

Summary: Recent experiments on fast pulse heating of graphite indicate a sharp maximum on the melting curve, prompting a study on extended in-plane defects in graphene which may contribute to the upper limit on its melting temperature. A proposed defect model explains the observed increase in specific heat in slow pulse heating experiments and the lack of such increase in fast pulse heating experiments indicates potential overheating.

A comprehensive assessment of empirical potentials for carbon materials

Cheng Qian et al.

Summary: This study compares CBOPs and GAP-20 ML potential for various carbon allotropes, finding that GAP-20 can more accurately predict the structure, defect properties, and formation energies of carbon. Despite its inability to accurately account for van der Waals interactions, GAP-20 performs well in studying the thermal and mechanical properties of carbon.
