Fundamental Technologies and Recent Advances of Cell-Sheet-Based Tissue Engineering

Chikahiro Imashiro et al.

Summary: Tissue engineering has been attracting significant attention since the 1980s, with cell sheet technology being a promising strategy to produce cell-dense tissues. Various techniques for fabricating and improving cell sheets have been studied, with the goal of mimicking physiological conditions and promoting vasculogenesis. This review highlights fundamental technologies and recent advances in cell-sheet-based tissue engineering, aiming to further develop tissue engineering applications.

Advancement of Biomaterial-Based Postoperative Adhesion Barriers

Arvind K. Singh Chandel et al.

Summary: Postoperative peritoneal adhesion (PPA) is a prevalent condition that can lead to severe complications. Various antiadhesion materials and drug delivery systems composed of biomaterials are clinically used to prevent PPA, along with the development of different animal adhesion models to evaluate new materials' efficacy.

Prevention of postoperative intrapericardial adhesion by dextrin hydrogel

Satoshi Kikusaki et al.

Summary: The bioabsorbable dextrin hydrogel (DHG) effectively prevented postoperative intrapericardial adhesion in Japanese white rabbits. The DHG-treated group showed looser adhesions and lower adhesion area compared to the untreated group after a 28-day observation period. Intrapericardial adhesion induction led to a proliferative response primarily in the cardiac tissue beneath the adhesion, with significantly fewer proliferative cells in the DHG-treated group compared to the untreated group.

A review of physiological and cellular mechanisms underlying fibrotic postoperative adhesion

Qiongyuan Hu et al.

Summary: Postoperative adhesions (PA) are fibrotic tissues that commonly occur after abdominal and pelvic surgery, with no optimal drug or material for prevention identified yet. Disruption of peritoneal mesothelial cells is suggested as the primary cause of PA, leading to a cascade of events and ultimately fibrous exudate formation. Various immune cells are recruited into adhesive peritoneal tissues, contributing to the development of PA following peritoneal trauma.
