Green infrastructure for air quality improvement in street canyons

Mamatha Tomson et al.

Summary: This review assesses the suitability of green infrastructure (GI) in street canyons for air quality improvement, highlighting green walls, green screens, and green roofs as potentially viable options in existing street canyons where planting space is limited. Deposition of pollutants on leaves is an important factor influencing the effectiveness of plant species in mitigating pollution, with micromorphological leaf traits such as grooves, ridges, trichomes, stomatal density, and epicuticular wax amount positively correlating with deposition. Further research is needed to substantiate the efficacy of green walls and green screens in street canyons.

Numerical investigation of bus stop structures in Seoul for the reduction of fine dust entry

Seung-Yoon Noh et al.

Summary: The study found that curved fence and canopy-type air blast structures can effectively reduce fine dust entry into bus stops, enhancing passengers' protection from particulate matter exposure. Among different models, the curved fence model was the most effective, while the canopy-type air blast structure showed the highest reduction rate in particle entry into bus stops.

Guidelines for passive control of traffic-related air pollution in street canyons: An overview for urban planning

D. Voordeckers et al.

Summary: Recent studies highlight the importance of addressing traffic-related air pollution in urban environments, particularly in street canyons with limited natural ventilation and higher pollution levels. Despite numerous studies conducted on this issue, information remains fragmented and applications in urban planning are relatively unknown. Therefore, this study aims to provide a comprehensive overview, formulate spatial guidelines, and improve the application of reviewed studies in urban planning.

The effects of lateral entrainment on pollutant dispersion inside a street canyon and the corresponding optimal urban design strategies

Zhengtong Li et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of lateral entrainment on pollutant dispersion within urban street canyons and proposes three optimization strategies to improve air quality. Results show that lateral entrainment can significantly reduce pollutant concentrations in high-rise canyons. The three strategies can effectively enhance lateral entrainment, leading to a substantial reduction in pollutant concentrations and personal intake fractions of residents.

Summary: The study investigated the distribution patterns of traffic-related pollutants near a viaduct in Xi'an, China, and found that noise barriers and combination barriers have beneficial effects in mitigating air pollution near viaducts. The research revealed that the combination of different barrier types led to greater reductions in UFP, PM2.5, and BC concentrations compared to noise barriers alone.
