Unraveling the association between the urban polycentric structure and urban surface thermal environment in urbanizing China

Zhixi Xu et al.

Summary: The urban surface thermal environment in China has undergone significant changes during the process of accelerated urbanization, impacting urban eco-security, socioeconomic activities, and residents' comfort and health. This study investigates the association between urban polycentric structure and the urban surface thermal environment of major Chinese cities at the prefecture level and above. The findings suggest that an increase in the degree of polycentricity contributes to a more uniform distribution of land surface temperature (LST) and an increase in the number of high-temperature patches, while also correlating with smaller high-temperature patches.

Spatially-heterogeneous impacts of surface characteristics on urban thermal environment, a case of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area

Ping Yu Fan et al.

Summary: This study explores spatially varied climate-sensitive urban design in the GBA, finding that LCZ 8 low-rise buildings require more attention for thermal mitigation, while LCZ D urban low plants type may be a more effective climate mitigation strategy. The relationship between UTCI and urban form specifies thermal mitigation strategies and appropriate locations for climate-sensitive urban design.

Monitoring thermal environment deterioration and its dynamic response to urban expansion in Wuhan, China

Qijiao Xie et al.

Summary: Understanding the dynamic response of thermal environment to urban expansion is crucial for developing effective UHI mitigation measures. This study in Wuhan, China, monitored the spatiotemporal variation of thermal characteristics and its response to urbanization using multi-temporal remotely sensed images. The results show that rapid urbanization significantly contributed to thermal deterioration in Wuhan over a 29-year period, and the dynamics of urban development could better explain the dynamic characteristics of thermal environment in rapidly urbanized areas.

Summary: The study found that in the GBA, the area of ISA increased significantly from 2000 to 2015, expanding to the east, southeast, and south. The internal density of ISA also increased over the past 15 years. There was a strong positive correlation between the LST and the density of ISA, with higher ISA density areas having higher LSTs.

Localized synergies between heat waves and urban heat islands: Implications on human thermal comfort and urban heat management

Bao-Jie He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the synergy between heat waves and urban heat islands, revealing that less urbanized areas are more sensitive to the impacts. Air moisture and wind play a beneficial role in alleviating heat exacerbation, but the extent varies depending on geographic conditions, temperature types, and heat wave/normal conditions.

Heavy metal pollution in urban river sediment of different urban functional areas and its influence on microbial community structure

Feng Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial and vertical distributions of heavy metals (HMs) and the related environmental risk in the contaminated urban river, Songgang River, in Shenzhen. Results showed that industrial and residential areas had higher HM contents, with Cu, Ni, and Cr posing high potential risks. Microbial community analysis indicated the dominance of HM-tolerant bacteria in layers with high HM contents.

Summary: This study analyzed the influencing factors and characteristics of the urban thermal environment using sampling data and images, finding correlations between greenery and building proportions with air temperature and humidity. By comparing analyses, it was discovered that areas near intersections, water bodies, mountains, and high-rise buildings in the city experience higher temperatures.

Influence of Impervious Surface Area and Fractional Vegetation Cover on Seasonal Urban Surface Heating/Cooling Rates

Youshui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of impervious surface areas (ISA) and vegetation cover on the urban thermal environment, revealing the trends of different ISA and FVC categories on LST, SHR, and SCR in different seasons. The results showed that in summer, there is a decrease in SHR as percent ISA increases and an increase in SCR as FVC increases. The trends of SHR/SCR as a function of percent ISA/FVC are more complex in spring and autumn.

Future urban expansion and local climate zone changes in relation to land surface temperature: Case of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Thailand

Dararat Khamchiangta et al.

Summary: This study focuses on analyzing land use and land cover changes in Bangkok from 1991 to 2016, and predicts future urban expansion and warming trends. The results show that the built-up area in Bangkok will continue to expand in the northern, southern, and western parts, leading to an increase in surface temperature. The study suggests that the western part of the city will be warmer by approximately 1 to 2 degrees Celsius in the future.
