Pergularia daemia alters epileptogenesis and attenuates cognitive impairment in kainate-treated mice: Insight into anti-inflammatory mechanisms

Antoine Kavaye Kandeda et al.

Summary: This study found that the extract of P. daemia has anti-inflammatory activity during epileptogenesis in kainate-treated mice, reducing the duration of seizures and improving cognitive function. P. daemia also decreased levels of inflammatory markers in the hippocampus and blood, and protected against neuronal loss in CA1 and CA3 areas of the hippocampus.

The Kainic Acid Models of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

Evgeniia Rusina et al.

Summary: Experimental models of epilepsy, particularly the kainic acid model, offer researchers a rich variety of phenotypes that can help in understanding the mechanisms and potential treatments of temporal lobe epilepsy. The different modes of KA administration produce varied effects and outcomes, highlighting the importance of considering strain, species, gender, and age factors in research. Additional work is needed to fully explore the potential of KA models in epilepsy research.

T cell numbers correlate with neuronal loss rather than with seizure activity in medial temporal lobe epilepsy

Anna R. Troescher et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed histopathological investigation of T cell involvement in various subgroups of MTLE, indicating that T cell influx correlates more with neuronal loss than seizure activity. T cell numbers were significantly elevated in MTLE patients compared to healthy controls, with varying levels among different subgroups. Interestingly, T cell numbers remained elevated in most MTLE groups even years after the inciting event.
