Association of diet with clinical outcomes in dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure*

A. L. Walker et al.

Summary: Prior grain-free diets (pGF) have an effect on reverse cardiac remodeling and clinical outcomes in dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and congestive heart failure (CHF). The study found that dogs in the pGF group that survived at least one week after diagnosis of DCM, CHF treatment, and diet change had better clinical outcomes and reverse ventricular remodeling compared to dogs in the grain-inclusive (GI) group.

The Effect of Fermentation of High- or Low-Tannin Fava Bean on Glucose Tolerance, Body Weight, Cardiovascular Function, and Blood Parameters in Dogs After 7 Days of Feeding: Comparison With Commercial Diets With Normal vs. High Protein

Luciana G. Reis et al.

Summary: The study found that fava beans appear to be safe as a dog food ingredient in the short term, and their nutritional value may be improved by fermentation. Blood chemistry parameters and cardiovascular function were affected by protein content, indicating a need for further investigation with longer term feeding trials.
