Extensive allele mining discovers novel genetic diversity in the loci controlling frost tolerance in barley

Davide Guerra et al.

Summary: Exome sequencing-based allele mining in barley reveals that HvCBF14, rather than CNV at the Fr-H2 locus, is the main gene responsible for frost tolerance. Analysis of SNPs and read counts identified new deletions linked to reduced vernalization requirement, and highlighted the importance of HvCBF14 in controlling frost tolerance. This study provides a powerful resource for discovering novel alleles at relevant genes in barley.

Water Stress-Induced Responses in the Growth, Cuticular Wax Composition, Chloroplast Pigments and Soluble Protein Content, and Redox Metabolism of Two Genotypes of Ricinus communis L.

Marina Medeiros de Araujo Silva et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physiological and biochemical responses to different water regimes in two castor bean genotypes. It found that the cuticular wax load on leaves significantly increased under high water stress, and water stress led to an increase in hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde content, a decrease in soluble protein content, and an increase in the activity of key enzymes of the antioxidant defense system. The BRS Nordestina genotype showed a more efficient protection mechanism against drought compared to BRS Energia.

Seed germination responses to soil hydraulic conductivity and polyethylene glycol (PEG) osmotic solutions

Manuel E. Camacho et al.

Summary: Our study compared seed germination of four plant species in PEG and four soils with different textures under different water potentials, finding significant differences in total germination under different conditions. We found that soil water potential is more directly related to germination rate, and Kh provides a more robust description of germination rate across species and soils.

Effects of nanocapsules of poly-ε-caprolactone containing artemisinin on zebrafish early-life stages and adults

Ives Charlie-Silva et al.

Summary: The study highlights the toxic effects of combining artemisinin with polymeric nanoparticles on zebrafish embryos and adults, showing increased coagulation and pericarditis, respectively. These findings suggest potential ecotoxicological concerns regarding the therapeutic use of such combination.

Physiological and biochemical responses of soybean plants inoculated with Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and Bradyrhizobium under drought stress

Mohamed S. Sheteiwy et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the application of biofertilizers can significantly improve the growth performance and stress tolerance of soybean plants under drought conditions. This integrated approach may enhance the resilience of agro ecosystems to climate change and help to enhance soil fertility and plant growth under drought stress.

Soil hydrological process and migration mode influenced by the freeze-thaw process in the activity layer of permafrost regions in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Cao Wei et al.

Summary: The study found that soil hydrological processes in the active layer of permafrost regions are influenced by factors such as temperature, terrain, and precipitation. Soil moisture and suprapermafrost water level show different stage changes with the freeze-thaw process, while soil temperature exhibits significant linear correlations with soil moisture and suprapermafrost water level.
