Lower risk of hepatocellular carcinoma with tenofovir than entecavir treatment in subsets of chronic hepatitis B patients: an updated meta-analysis

Bao-Hong Yuan et al.

Summary: This study included 24 comparative studies involving 37,771 CHB patients treated with TDF and 72,094 treated with ETV. The results showed that TDF was associated with a lower risk of HCC compared to ETV, especially in patients from Asia and/or nucleos(t)ide naive individuals.

Summary: In a meta-analysis of studies on patients with chronic HBV infection, it was found that TDF treatment was associated with a significantly lower risk of HCC (20%) compared to entecavir treatment. Randomized trials are needed to support this finding.

Summary: Through a systematic review and meta-analysis of 14 studies, it was found that TDF may be associated with a lower risk of HCC compared to ETV. However, in analyses including adjusted data, patients treated with ETV may have a slightly higher risk of HCC compared to those treated with TDF.

Summary: The study found that high medication adherence (>= 90%) is crucial in significantly reducing the risk of mortality and renal failure in patients with chronic hepatitis B undergoing long-term treatment with entecavir.

Summary: The study validated the accuracy of the HCC-RESCUE score in predicting HCC risk in Caucasian CHB patients under entecavir or tenofovir therapy. Patients grouped based on the HCC-RESCUE score showed significant differences in HCC incidence at 5 and 10 years.
