MICAL1 inhibits colorectal cancer cell migration and proliferation by regulating the EGR1/β-catenin signaling pathway

Huanyu Gu et al.

Summary: This study found that MICAL1 is down-regulated in colorectal cancer (CRC) and is associated with the metastatic status of the tumor. Overexpression of MICAL1 inhibits cell migration and growth, increases the expression of E-cadherin and Occludin, and suppresses the expression of Vimentin and N-cadherin. On the other hand, silencing MICAL1 promotes cell migration and enhances epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT).

High expression of S100A2 predicts poor prognosis in patients with endometrial carcinoma

Qinzhen Zhang et al.

Summary: S100A2 is significantly upregulated in endometrial carcinoma and is associated with poor prognosis. It serves as an independent risk factor for overall survival in patients with endometrial carcinoma. Additionally, S100A2 has a high diagnostic value for endometrial carcinoma. The estrogen and IL-17 signaling pathways are upregulated in the high S100A2 expression group, suggesting their involvement in the cellular mechanisms related to S100A2 in endometrial carcinoma.

MICAL1 regulates actin cytoskeleton organization, directional cell migration and the growth of human breast cancer cells as orthotopic xenograft tumours

David J. McGarry et al.

Summary: The disruption of MICAL1 gene affected F-actin organization, cell size, motility and gene expression, with over 700 genes showing significant changes. Receptor regulator activity was identified as the most significant negatively enriched molecular function gene set, and MICAL1 disruption attenuated breast cancer tumor growth in vivo. Elevated MICAL1 gene expression was associated with invasive breast cancer and reduced progression free survival in human patients.

MICAL-L2 Is Essential for c-Myc Deubiquitination and Stability in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer Cells

Pengxiang Min et al.

Summary: The study showed that MICAL-L2 is highly expressed in human NSCLC and plays a role in promoting cancer cell proliferation by interacting with and stabilizing c-Myc protein. Depletion of MICAL-L2 led to reduced c-Myc stability and decreased cancer cell proliferation. This suggests that MICAL-L2 may be a potential therapeutic target for NSCLC.

Surgical outcomes and survival rates of colon cancer in children and young adults

Adesola C. Akinkuotu et al.

Summary: This study found that despite presenting with more advanced disease, colon cancer patients aged <=25 generally had better survival rates compared to those aged >25. Age was not identified as a risk factor for increased mortality, while male gender and uninsured status were associated with higher mortality risk.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

MICAL2 Contributes to Gastric Cancer Cell Proliferation by Promoting YAP Dephosphorylation and Nuclear Translocation

Chenxiang Qi et al.

Summary: High expression of MICAL2 in gastric cancer tissues is associated with carcinogenesis and poor overall survival. Knockdown of MICAL2 leads to cell cycle arrest in the S phase and decreased cell proliferation, accompanied by reduced levels of CDK6 and cyclin D proteins. MICAL2 promotes gastric cancer cell proliferation through ROS generation and Cdc42 activation, both contributing to YAP dephosphorylation and nuclear translocation.
