Summary: Plant secondary metabolites are being explored as potential alternatives for treating infectious and chronic diseases, particularly in therapeutics showing toxicity against bacterial pathogens and viruses. Terpenoid and phenylpropanoid plant metabolites have known antibacterial and antiviral properties, but also pose toxicity risks to eukaryotic cells. There is a need for sensing methods that can accurately report the dosage and accumulation of these compounds. Full-cell reporters are cost-effective and easy to maintain.
