Selenium, Zinc, Chromium, and Vanadium Levels in Serum, Hair, and Urine Samples of Obese Adults Assessed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Alexey A. Tinkov et al.

Summary: The study investigated Se, Zn, Cr, and V levels in blood serum, hair, and urine of adult obese patients. Obese subjects had lower serum Cr and V levels, higher serum Se levels, and higher hair Cr, Se, and V levels compared to controls. Zinc levels in hair were lower in obese subjects, while V and Zn levels in urine were higher. The prevalence of hypertension in obese subjects was associated with impaired Se and Zn levels. Serum Cr, V, and hair Zn were inversely associated with BMI, while hair Se was a positive predictor. Monitoring Se exposure in well-nourished adults may help reduce its contribution to obesity.

Electrochemical paper-based microfluidic device for on-line isolation of proteins and direct detection of lead in urine

Wan Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (muPAD) was developed for the online isolation of proteins and electrochemical detection of lead ions (Pb(II)) in urine samples. Experimental parameters were optimized, leading to a maximum protein concentration of 300 mg L-1, a linear range of 10-500 µg L-1, and a detection limit of 9 µg L-1. The device's effectiveness was demonstrated through quantification of Pb(II) in urine samples, showing results consistent with atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS).
