Design and engineering of artificial microbial consortia for biohydrogen production

Ipek Ergal et al.

Summary: The metabolic diversity of organisms in natural microbial ecosystems enables interaction and syntrophic interactions among community members. Artificial microbial consortium engineering is used in biotechnology to improve productivity and yields. However, to achieve supreme productivity or efficiency at industrial scale, defined ecosystems must be physiologically well-selected to meet eco-biotechnological demands.

Fast Proton Transport in FeFe Hydrogenase via a Flexible Channel and a Proton Hole Mechanism

Rakesh C. Puthenkalathil et al.

Summary: This study presents a detailed investigation of the proton transfer pathway in di-iron hydrogenases, a class of enzymes capable of efficiently reducing protons to molecular hydrogen. The research reveals that protons are transported through a flexible channel lined with amino acids and water molecules, and the transport mechanism operates via a hole mechanism. The study also confirms that proton transport is not rate-limiting in H-2 formation activity.

Integrated biohydrogen production via lignocellulosic waste: Opportunity, challenges & future prospects

Tripti Singh et al.

Summary: Biological hydrogen production is a clean, renewable, and potentially sustainable way to generate energy. Dark and photo fermentations are considered more sustainable and economical, but they have limitations such as low yield and production rate. Integrating dark and photo fermentation, using lignocellulosic biomass, may improve and accelerate biohydrogen production technology sustainably.

Regulation of nitrogen source for enhanced photobiological H2 production by co-culture of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Mesorhizobium sangaii

Qian Yu et al.

Summary: The study showed that different nitrogen compounds can increase biomass and hydrogen production in a co-cultivation system of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Mesorhizobium sangaii, with 3 g/L NaNO2 being the most effective. The addition of nitrogen compounds also enhanced the hydrogenase activity, respiration rate, chlorophyll content, and starch accumulation of the algae, leading to increased hydrogen production. Sustainable hydrogen production can be achieved by intermittently supplementing nitrogen compounds into the microalgae-bacteria co-culture system.
