Cattle manure compost humification process by inoculation ammonia-oxidizing bacteria

Zhiming Xu et al.

Summary: Newly isolated ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOBs) showed effectiveness in promoting the degradation and humification process of cattle manure compost. Among them, MT-AOB-2-4 had the most significant impact, enhancing bacterial activity and promoting the formation of humic substances. High abundance of Bacillaceae, amoA, and nirS were correlated with humification factors.

Modified lignite and black coal reduce ammonia volatilization from cattle manure

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that modified lignite and BC significantly reduce NH3 volatilization from manure by adsorbing and biologically immobilizing ammoniacal N. Additionally, the NH4+-N concentration in amended manure was significantly higher, indicating a positive impact on manure quality.

Bacterial and fungal community dynamics during different stages of agro-industrial waste composting and its relationship with compost suppressiveness

Alicia Hernandez-Lara et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of three composting piles on the bacterial and fungal communities of baby-leaf lettuce crops, finding that fungal communities were more influenced by composting phases while bacterial communities were more sensitive to chemical changes. All composts were considered stable and mature, with compost C_C showing higher maturity. Bacterial phyla related to soil-borne pathogen suppression were more abundant in all three composts, but C_A and C_B showed higher suppressiveness against P. irregulare than C_C, likely due to higher abundance of potential suppressive genera such as Aspergillus and Penicillium.

Sustainable management and recycling of food waste anaerobic digestate: A review

Shanta Dutta et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is widely used to produce biogas from food waste, but a significant amount of nutrient-rich food waste anaerobic digestate (FWD) remains under-utilised. FWD has potential as a nutrient source for microalgal cultivation and biofuel production, and emerging technologies like thermal conversion show promise in converting FWD into value-added products like biochar/hydrochar. Integrated AD with valorisation facilities is encouraged to achieve complete resource utilisation and reduce carbon emissions.

Enhanced control of sulfonamide resistance genes and host bacteria during thermophilic aerobic composting of cow manure

Muhammad Fahad Sardar et al.

Summary: Traditional composting has shown certain effects in eliminating antibiotic residues, ARBs, and ARGs. However, the rebounding of ARGs during conventional aerobic composting remains a serious threat. This study found that thermophilic aerobic composting can enhance the degradation of antibiotics, limit the rebounding of ARGs, and significantly influence bacterial diversity. Network analysis revealed potential hosts of ARGs and suggested that thermophilic composting may be more efficient in controlling antibiotic resistance compared to conventional methods.

Additives for reducing nitrogen loss during composting: A review

Guangchun Shan et al.

Summary: NH3 and N2O emissions are major forms of nitrogen loss during composting, and additives can effectively reduce these losses. However, the wide variety and complexity of additives pose challenges and potential drawbacks. Physical, chemical, and microbial additives have their own advantages and limitations in reducing NH3 and N2O emissions during composting. Future research should focus on compound additives, reusable porous materials, and the activity of microbial additives to further enhance nitrogen retention in composting.

Mitigation of carbon and nitrogen losses during pig manure composting: A meta-analysis

Zhi Zhang et al.

Summary: Composting is a reliable method for recycling manure in sustainable agriculture, but poor management can lead to decreased quality and negative environmental impacts. Meta-analysis results show that controlling feedstock properties, composting process conditions, and applying additives in combination is an effective way to reduce C and N losses, produce high-quality compost products, and minimize environmental pollution.
