Impact of light on microalgal photosynthetic microbial fuel cells and removal of pollutants by nanoadsorbent biopolymers: Updates, challenges and innovations

Mohd Jahir Khan et al.

Summary: Photosynthetic microbial fuel cells (PMFCs) with microalgae show potential in treating wastewater and generating electrical energy. The efficiency relies on algal growth, impacted by light intensity, resulting in biomass rich in biopolymers. Biopolymers recovered from biological sources can act as nanoadsorbents with nanomaterials, enhancing PMFC efficiency by removing pollutants. The review discusses the effects of light intensity on algae growth, recovery of biopolymers, removal of pollutants, and future perspectives in this field.

Recent insights into microalgae-assisted microbial fuel cells for generating sustainable bioelectricity

Mostafa E. Elshobary et al.

Summary: The usage of microbial fuel cells (MFC) for power generation from renewable biomass sources and the efficient utilization of chemical energy stored in microalgae biomass for the production of biofuels and other bioproducts have attracted significant attention. Incorporating microalgae into MFC can enhance efficiency and provide a cost-effective renewable approach for electricity generation. While microalgae-assisted MFCs (MA-MFCs) show promise in sustainability, further research is needed to optimize performance and achieve large-scale application.

Enhanced power generation from algal biomass using multi-anode membrane-less sediment microbial fuel cell

Banu Taskan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the electricity generation capacity of mixed-culture algae biomass using a multi-anode sediment microbial fuel cell (SMFC), achieving a high-power density of 2965 mW/m(2) with a tin-coated copper mesh (TCCM) anode and platinum-coated titanium mesh cathode. Microscopic observations and gene profiling analysis confirmed the biocompatibility of TCCM facilitates bacterial adhesion and enrichment of electroactive bacterial groups. The findings suggest that algae biomass can significantly improve electricity generation in SMFC.

Inhibition of AHL-mediated quorum sensing to control biofilm thickness in microbial fuel cell by using Rhodococcus sp. BH4

Banu Taskan et al.

Summary: The research utilized a novel quorum quenching strategy to control the biofilm thickness on the anode surface in microbial fuel cells (MFCs), achieving significant improvements in power generation performance. Inhibiting signal molecules in the anode chamber reduced extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) production and optimized MFC electricity generation. The addition of Rhodococcus sp.BH4 beads in the MFC resulted in decreased biofilm thickness and dead bacteria abundance, indicating the effectiveness of the QQ strategy for enhancing MFC performance.
