Enzymatic Hydrolysis, Kinetic Modeling of Hemicellulose Fraction, and Energy Efficiency of Autohydrolysis Pretreatment Using Agave Bagasse

Shiva et al.

Summary: Agave bagasse shows potential as raw material for second-generation biorefineries, however, the recalcitrance of lignocellulose biomass hinders its conversion into fermentable sugars. This study explores an alternative autohydrolysis process to fractionate the biomass, with the pretreated solid phase containing more than 41.71% glucan content. A kinetic modeling of hemicellulose fraction depolymerization was also conducted. The cellulolytic hydrolysis process yielded a significant increase in glucose concentration and achieved high saccharification conversion.

Magnetic Nanoparticles as Support for Cellulase Immobilization Strategy for Enzymatic Hydrolysis Using Hydrothermally Pretreated Corn Cob Biomass

Elisa Zanuso et al.

Summary: Enzymatic hydrolysis is crucial for converting lignocellulosic biomass, and this study found that enzyme immobilization is an effective strategy to enhance the process. The researchers successfully immobilized cellulase onto chitosan-coated magnetic nanoparticles, and the catalyst maintained stability and activity even after multiple cycles of reuse. The study also demonstrated the efficiency of the immobilized cellulase in lignocellulosic biomass hydrolysis and its potential for cost reduction and enzyme reusability.

Challenges in cellulase bioprocess for biofuel applications

Reeta Rani Singhania et al.

Summary: The increasing population and industrialization have led to a higher demand for liquid fossil fuels, resulting in increased greenhouse gas emissions. Bioethanol, produced from lignocellulosic biomass through enzymes, is considered a potential alternative to fossil fuels. Cellulases have been identified as the limiting factor for bioethanol production, but advances in bioprocesses have significantly reduced their cost, making bioethanol production cost-effective.

High-pressure technology for Sargassum spp biomass pretreatment and fractionation in the third generation of bioethanol production

E. Aparicio et al.

Summary: Sargassum spp biomass was subjected to high-pressure technology for biomass fractionation to obtain glucan enriched pretreated solids, which were then further hydrolyzed with enzymes to produce glucose with high conversion yields. A pre-simultaneous saccharification and fermentation strategy was used to produce bioethanol from the glucose, demonstrating the feasibility of bioethanol production from macroalgal biomass.

Summary: Enzyme immobilization is an important strategy to reduce enzyme costs, enhance stability, and allow for easy recovery and reuse. However, there is a lack of research on enzyme-substrate interactions, limiting the implementation of this strategy. Studies on immobilized lignocellulosic enzymes contribute to fill knowledge gaps and improve the feasibility and attractiveness of biorefineries.
