The effect of rhizosphere and the plant species on the degradation of sulfonamides in model constructed wetlands treating synthetic domestic wastewater

Jiaxi Wang et al.

Summary: The effects of rhizosphere and plant species on the degradation of sulfonamides in constructed wetlands are significant, with oxygen and dissolved organic carbon content promoting bacterial abundance and composition. The presence of oxygen in the rhizosphere plays a crucial role in the degradation of sulfonamides.

The effect of sulfamethoxazole on nitrogen removal and electricity generation in a tidal flow constructed wetland coupled with a microbial fuel cell system: Microbial response

Xiang Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of sulfamethoxazole concentration on nitrogen removal efficiency and electricity generation in tidal flow constructed wetlands coupled with microbial fuel cells (TFCW-MFCs). It also analyzes the microbial response to system performance using high-throughput sequencing. The results show that the presence of sulfamethoxazole affects the efficiency of nitrogen removal and electricity generation, as well as the composition and functions of microbial communities.

Transcriptomics and proteomics revealed the psychrotolerant and antibiotic-resistant mechanisms of strain Pseudomonas psychrophila RNC-1 capable of assimilatory nitrate reduction and aerobic denitrification

Yuanyi Zhao et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the response of a psychrotolerant aerobic denitrifying bacteria to temperature and antibiotic stress. It was found that strain RNC-1 performed well at lower temperatures but had inhibited growth at higher temperatures. Proteomics analysis revealed the metabolic adaptations of RNC-1 under low temperature conditions. SMX at different concentrations had different effects on nitrate reduction. This study provides insights into the metabolic adaption of RNC-1 under different stress conditions, which is important for its application in nitrogen contaminated wastewater treatment processes.

Successional Dynamics of Molecular Ecological Network of Anammox Microbial Communities under Elevated Salinity

Tao Ya et al.

Summary: The study found that high salinity inhibits the performance of anammox, but under low salinity conditions, microbial networks become closer and more complex, serving as a survival strategy. Microbial taxa such as Planctomycetes and Candidatus Kuenenia show increased competitive relationships under 30 g/L NaCl, which may contribute to the deterioration of nitrogen removal. However, the microbial community network tends to gradually adapt to elevated salinity, indicating a potential for resilience.

Fate of an antibiotic and its effects on nitrogen transformation functional bacteria in integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands

Yucong Zheng et al.

Summary: This study found that chronic exposure to SMX can lead to a decline in nitrogen removal performance of IVCW, but IVCW still demonstrates a high removal efficiency of sulfamethoxazole. ANAMMOX may be a potential pathway for nitrogen removal, but it can result in the accumulation of NO3--N and carbon deficiency. Through biodegradation, IVCW shows a potential for treating wastewater containing antibiotics.

Biodegradation of sulfonamide antibiotics through the heterologous expression of laccases from bacteria and investigation of their potential degradation pathways

Li-Hua Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, seven laccase genes were heterologously expressed in E.coli using different signal peptides, and applied for the removal of sulfadiazine, sulfamethazine, and sulfamethoxazole. Different mediators like ABTS and HBT were found to either slightly promote or inhibit the removal of sulfonamides by the recombinant strains. The study also proposed degradation pathways of sulfonamides involving various mechanisms such as SO2 elimination and N-S bond cleavage.

Exploitation of extracellular organic matter from Micrococcus luteus to enhance ex situ bioremediation of soils polluted with used lubricants

Attila Bodor et al.

Summary: The study showed that using extracellular organic matter (EOM) from Micrococcus luteus to enhance bioremediation of ULO pollution was effective, with a significant increase in microbial activity and degradation efficiency. High-throughput 16S rRNA analysis revealed that the enhancement was attributed to the reactivation of hydrocarbonoclastic bacterial genera and the long-term positive effect of EOM on the introduced rhodococci. Reducing ULO concentration did not necessarily correlate with decreased soil toxicity.
