Bioconversion of mature landfill leachate into biohydrogen and volatile fatty acids via microalgal photosynthesis together with dark fermentation

Haowen Feng et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method that combines microalgal photosynthesis with dark fermentation to reclaim nutrients and organics from landfill leachate and produce biohydrogen and volatile fatty acids. The results demonstrate that microalgae can grow well in the leachate and efficiently recover nitrogen and organics, converting them into energy through dark fermentation.

Coupling of myo-inositol with salinity regulates ethylene-induced microalgal lipid hyperproduction in molasses wastewater

Tengsheng Qiao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of a joint strategy involving myo-inositol (MI) and salinity stress on lipid productivity of Monoraphidium sp. QLY-1 in molasses wastewater (MW). The results showed that the combined treatment significantly increased lipid productivity and enhanced nutrient removal from the MW. Furthermore, the application of MI upregulated lipogenic gene expressions and activated autophagy and ethylene signaling, thereby mitigating salinity-induced damage.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid facilitates the simultaneous production of biomass, astaxanthin and lipids in Haematococcus pluvialis under salinity and high-light stress conditions

Qingqing Li et al.

Summary: Under combined salinity stress and high-light stresses, treatment with 0.25 mM GABA led to the highest biomass, astaxanthin production, and lipids content in Haematococcus pluvialis. GABA also increased transcript levels of biosynthesis genes, endogenous GABA and carbohydrates, while decreasing reactive oxygen species levels. The intracellular GABA was found to regulate cell growth, astaxanthin production, and lipids synthesis through mediating carotenogenesis, lipogenesis, and ROS signalling.

Role of melatonin in regulation of lipid accumulation, autophagy and salinity-induced oxidative stress in microalga Monoraphidium sp. QLY-1

Yongteng Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that melatonin significantly promoted lipid accumulation in Monoraphidium sp. QLY-1 under salinity stress by upregulating lipogenesis-related genes, reducing oxidative stress, and promoting autophagic activity. Furthermore, the combination of melatonin and the autophagy activator rapamycin further increased lipid content, suggesting a valuable strategy for enhancing lipid production in microalgae.

The disassembly of lipid droplets in Chlamydomonas

Yonghua Li-Beisson et al.

Summary: Lipid droplets are specialized organelles in eukaryotic cells, consisting of a triacylglycerol core surrounded by a monolayer of membrane lipids. Their functions range from energy storage to signal transduction, and their turnover is tightly coordinated with cellular metabolic needs in a fluctuating environment. In Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, key components of lipid droplet turnover have been identified, highlighting the physiological significance of this process in algal oil research.

The emerging role of GABA as a transport regulator and physiological signal

Bo Xu et al.

Summary: The proposal of GABA acting as a signal in plants has been around for decades, but its signaling mode of action has only recently been uncovered. Recent research shows that GABA regulates anion transport through ALMTs, suggesting broad regulatory roles in plants. GABA is involved in regulating pollen tube growth, stomatal aperture, and potentially long-distance signaling and interactions with various hormones.
