Biofilm matrix and artificial mediator for efficient electron transport in CO2 microbial electrosynthesis

Young Eun Song et al.

Summary: Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a promising method to convert inorganic gaseous carbon into valuable chemicals through electrode-based electron transfer. The addition of artificial mediators improves acetate synthesis, and regular media replacement helps adapt mediator-utilizing species. Biofilm composition and interaction with suspended cells play a crucial role in MES performance.

Photoautotrophic hydrogen production of Rhodobacter sphaeroides in a microbial electrosynthesis cell

Shuwei Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photoautotrophic H-2 production of Rhodobacter sphaeroides in microbial electrosynthesis, utilizing CO2 as the sole carbon source. The research also explored the impact of glutamate as a nitrogen source on hydrogen production. The findings showed that MES-driven electron and proton transfer enabled simultaneous hydrogen production and CO2 uptake, with significant improvements in hydrogen production when using glutamate.

Structure of Geobacter pili reveals secretory rather than nanowire behaviour

Yangqi Gu et al.

Summary: Geobacter species transfer electrons extracellularly through microbial nanowires known as surface appendages. Recent studies have revealed that the nanowires consist of cytochromes OmcS and OmcZ, rather than the previously believed pili composed of PilA-N protein. The use of PilA-C in assembling heterodimeric pili resembles the structure and function of type 2 secretion pseudopili, indicating a potential widespread effect on diverse electron-transferring microorganisms.

From Electricity to Products: Recent Updates on Microbial Electrosynthesis (MES)

Marzieh Omidi et al.

Summary: Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a primary platform for generating electricity or value-added products by utilizing the interaction between electroactive microorganisms and electrodes, contributing to the production of specialty chemicals and CO2 sequestration. Improving MES performance through electrode and membrane modification is crucial, but technical challenges still need to be overcome for widespread industrial application.
