Integrated biorefinery development using winery waste streams for the production of bacterial cellulose, succinic acid and value-added fractions

Katiana Filippi et al.

Summary: An integrated biorefinery was developed using winery wastes like grape pomace, grape-seed oil, and wine lees to produce bacterial cellulose, grape-seed oil, ethanol, succinic acid, and other products through optimized lignin removal and polyphenol extraction. The experimental design successfully optimized the extraction processes and achieved high yields of targeted products, demonstrating the potential for comprehensive utilization of winery wastes in biorefinery applications.

Techno-economic evaluation and life-cycle assessment of poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) production within a biorefinery concept using sunflower-based biodiesel industry by-products

Vasiliki Kachrimanidou et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the techno-economic feasibility of a biorefinery concept using biodiesel industry by-products to produce PHB, CPE, and PI. While the economic viability of PHB production was achievable with consideration of revenues from co-products, market pricing and marketable end-uses were crucial for process profitability. Moreover, greenhouse gas emissions and abiotic depletion potential from this biorefinery concept were lower than polypropylene, suggesting sustainable PHB production.

Bioprocess development using organic biowaste and sustainability assessment of succinic acid production with engineered Yarrowia lipolytica strain

Eleni Stylianou et al.

Summary: The study focused on utilizing zero cost municipal organic biowaste for bio-based succinic acid production using the engineered yeast strain Yarrowia lipolytica PSA02004. By optimizing the pH regulation and carbon source concentration, the production efficiency of succinic acid was enhanced while reducing the NaOH consumption. This approach resulted in a significant decrease in the minimum selling price of succinic acid and a reduction in environmental impacts.

Insights from combining techno-economic and life cycle assessment - a case study of polyphenol extraction from red wine pomace

Giovanna Croxatto Vega et al.

Summary: By combining TEA and LCA to assess the environmental and economic performance of emerging processes for the valorization of red wine pomace, the study found that solvent extraction (SE) outperforms pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) at laboratory scale. Suggestions were made to reduce solvent use based on the carbon footprint (CFP) analysis at laboratory scale. Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) showed a significant shift in decision support depending on the valuation of economic or environmental benefits and helped interpret the 19 different indicators derived from the TEA-LCA results.

Upgrading wineries to biorefineries within a Circular Economy perspective: An Italian case study

A. Ncube et al.

Summary: Through a comprehensive environmental and life cycle assessment of traditional wine production in Italy, it was discovered that there were environmental impacts, particularly in the bottling phase. By introducing a biorefinery system based on winery waste, useful bio-based products like grapeseed oil and calcium tartrate can be recovered, leading to an upgrade to more sustainable production patterns in the wine industry.
