A meta-analysis reveals that operational parameters influence levels of antibiotic resistance genes during anaerobic digestion of animal manures

Daniel Flores-Orozco et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion has the potential to significantly reduce the levels of antibiotic-resistance genes (ARG) in animal manures. The effectiveness of ARG reduction can be influenced by parameters such as temperature, digestion time, and the addition of solids. Thermophilic anaerobic digestion is more effective than mesophilic digestion, and longer digestion times yield better ARG reduction rates. The addition of solids from an external source negatively affects ARG reduction efficiency.

Summary: This paper reviews the microbial composition and dynamics in anaerobic digestion, focusing on the connection between operational parameters and microbial community. The results suggest that both aceticlastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis are dominant in anaerobic digesters, with their composition depending on environmental conditions. Understanding the shifts in microbial composition and diversity due to operational parameters variation could improve the stability and performance of the process.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of feedstock to inoculum ratio and percolate recirculation time on high solids anaerobic digestion of organic waste. A ratio of 1 provided 86% methane potential, while a ratio of 3 only yielded 34% methane recovery. Summary: This review discusses the ecological effects of microplastics and antibiotic resistance genes in aquaculture environments. The widespread use of antibiotics in agricultural production leads to the presence of antibiotic residues in water and the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Additionally, water microplastics act as carriers of environmental microbes and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, potentially entering aquaculture environments and eventually the human body through food chains.
