Degradability of bioplastics in anaerobic digestion systems and their effects on biogas production: a review

Suat Vardar et al.

Summary: The organic fraction of municipal waste is a valuable resource for biogas production, which can be achieved through anaerobic digestion. Bioplastics, widely used in daily activities, have the potential to reach biogas plants via separate collection of the organic fraction of waste. However, different biopolymers degrade at different rates and under different conditions in anaerobic digestion. Pre-treatment and post-treatment methods are proposed as possible solutions for achieving better degradation or safer disposal of biopolymers. The effects of additives in biopolymers have not been widely studied and require further investigation.

Bioplastics for a circular economy

Jan-Georg Rosenboom et al.

Summary: Bioplastics have the potential to contribute to a more sustainable and circular economy by reducing carbon footprint and offering advantageous material properties. However, they also face challenges such as negative agricultural impacts, competition with food production, unclear end-of-life management, and higher costs. Emerging chemical and biological methods can enable the upcycling of plastic waste into higher-quality materials. Standardization and guidelines are needed to guide purchasing choices, and clear regulations and financial incentives are essential for the large-scale adoption of bioplastics in a truly sustainable manner.

Towards monitoring biodegradation of starch-based bioplastic in anaerobic condition: Finding a proper kinetic model

Iman Ebrahimzade et al.

Summary: This research studied the kinetics of methane production during anaerobic digestion of starch-based bioplastic using non-linear regressions and artificial neural networks. The findings showed that the M9 model proposed by the authors was the best predictor for methane production in the entire anaerobic digestion process.

Can anaerobic digestion be a suitable end-of-life scenario for biodegradable plastics? A critical review of the current situation, hurdles, and challenges

G. Cazaudehore et al.

Summary: Growing concern and interest in biodegradable plastics have been driven by the environmental impact of non-biodegradable plastics. The intensification of biowastes collection in Europe also contributes to the development of biodegradable plastics. However, there has been limited research on the biodegradability of these plastics through anaerobic digestion. This critical review provides an in-depth update on the process performance, parameters, microorganisms, and strategies used to enhance the degradation rate of biodegradable plastics.

Anaerobic co-digestion of a lignocellulosic residue with different organic wastes: Relationship between biomethane yield, soluble organic matter and process stability

Mirko Cucina et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate anaerobic co-digestion of lignocellulosic residues and the role of soluble organic matter, showing that co-digestion can increase biomethane yields with a positive correlation to soluble organic matter. Fruit wastes and brewery trub positively affected anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic residues, but fruit waste co-digestion may lead to early acidification.

The role of waste management in reducing bioplastics' leakage into the environment: A review

Mirko Cucina et al.

Summary: Bioplastics are increasingly being used as substitutes for petroleum-derived plastics due to their biodegradability, however, concerns arise over incomplete degradation and leakage into the environment during waste management processes. This paper reviews literature on the biodegradation of bioplastics in industrial and natural environments, and discusses the potential role of waste management processes in reducing bioplastics leakage.

Assessment of Disintegration of Compostable Bioplastic Bags by Management of Electromechanical and Static Home Composters

Lorenzo Maria Cafiero et al.

Summary: This study examined the physical degradation percentage of compostable bioplastic bags in two types of composters, showing that 90-96 wt% degradation can be achieved in six months in static home composters, and 90 wt% degradation in two months in an electromechanical composter. Additional curing treatment ensured complete physical degradation in the latter case. The use of compostable bioplastic bags appeared promising and consistent with home composting practices in terms of level and times of physical degradation.
