Techno-economic risk assessment, life cycle analysis and life cycle costing for poly(butylene succinate) and poly(lactic acid) production using renewable resources

Sofia Maria Ioannidou et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the sustainable production of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) from corn glucose syrup, corn stover, and sugar beet pulp (SBP) through process design, techno-economic assessment, life cycle evaluation, and life cycle costing (LCC). It was found that an SBP-based biorefinery could achieve cost-competitive PLA and PBS production with lower environmental impacts. Risk assessment showed that PLA and PBS could be produced from SBP at market prices of comparable materials with high probability of positive Net Present Value, demonstrating the potential for sustainable biorefinery development.

Techno-economic evaluation and life-cycle assessment of poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) production within a biorefinery concept using sunflower-based biodiesel industry by-products

Vasiliki Kachrimanidou et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the techno-economic feasibility of a biorefinery concept using biodiesel industry by-products to produce PHB, CPE, and PI. While the economic viability of PHB production was achievable with consideration of revenues from co-products, market pricing and marketable end-uses were crucial for process profitability. Moreover, greenhouse gas emissions and abiotic depletion potential from this biorefinery concept were lower than polypropylene, suggesting sustainable PHB production.

Bioprocess development using organic biowaste and sustainability assessment of succinic acid production with engineered Yarrowia lipolytica strain

Eleni Stylianou et al.

Summary: The study focused on utilizing zero cost municipal organic biowaste for bio-based succinic acid production using the engineered yeast strain Yarrowia lipolytica PSA02004. By optimizing the pH regulation and carbon source concentration, the production efficiency of succinic acid was enhanced while reducing the NaOH consumption. This approach resulted in a significant decrease in the minimum selling price of succinic acid and a reduction in environmental impacts.

Restructuring the sunflower-based biodiesel industry into a circular bio-economy business model converting sunflower meal and crude glycerol into succinic acid and value-added co-products

Maria-Nefeli Efthymiou et al.

Summary: A novel bio-economy business model has been developed using biodiesel industry by-products for producing bio-based succinic acid and value-added co-products. Sunflower meal fractionation resulted in an antioxidant-rich extract and a protein concentrate stream; Aspergillus awamori SSF produced enzymes. The SFM-derived hydrolysate was used for fermentation leading to succinic acid production.
