A Systematic Review of Sensing Technologies for Wearable Sleep Staging

Syed Anas Imtiaz

Summary: Designing wearable systems for sleep detection and staging is challenging due to various constraints, with the most common sensing modalities being EEG-based and PPG-based systems. EEG-based systems are the most accurate, capable of identifying all sleep stages, while PPG-based systems are simpler to use for wearable monitoring but cannot identify all sleep stages.

A single-channel EEG based automatic sleep stage classification method leveraging deep one-dimensional convolutional neural network and hidden Markov model

Bufang Yang et al.

Summary: Sleep stage classification is crucial for analyzing sleep patterns and diagnosing related disorders. In this study, we proposed a novel 1D-CNN-HMM model for automatic sleep stage classification, which outperformed existing methods on two different datasets. The combination of 1D-CNN and HMM improved the accuracy and kappa coefficient, particularly in identifying specific sleep stages like S1 and REM.

An Attention-Based Deep Learning Approach for Sleep Stage Classification With Single-Channel EEG

Emadeldeen Eldele et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel deep learning architecture named AttnSleep is proposed for automatic sleep stage classification using single channel EEG signals. The architecture incorporates multi-resolution convolutional neural network (MRCNN) and adaptive feature recalibration (AFR) for feature extraction, as well as a temporal context encoder (TCE) with multi-head attention mechanism to capture temporal dependencies among the extracted features. Evaluation on three public datasets demonstrates that AttnSleep outperforms state-of-the-art techniques in various evaluation metrics.
