The human milk oligosaccharides 2'-fucosyllactose and 6'-sialyllactose protect against the development of necrotizing enterocolitis by inhibiting toll-like receptor 4 signaling

Chhinder P. Sodhi et al.

Summary: The study showed that human milk oligosaccharides 2'-FL and 6'-SL can prevent NEC through inhibition of TLR4 signaling, while lactose cannot. The results indicate that these HMOs reduced NEC occurrence in mouse and piglet models.

Emergence of fatal Mannheimia haemolytica infections in cattle in the Netherlands

M. M. Biesheuvel et al.

Summary: The Dutch national surveillance system has observed outbreaks of fatal infections by M. haemolytica in dairy cows and veal calves, prompting an in-depth analysis of pathology data from 2004-2018. Multilevel logistic regression models revealed an increase in deaths associated with M. haemolytica infection over time, with an increase in both acute pleuropneumonia in dairy cows and polyserositis in veal calves. Infections with M. haemolytica were found to be the most likely cause of death and were more common in certain regions and seasons.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Fructo-Oligosaccharides in a Calf Lung Infection Model and in Mannheimia haemolytica-Infected Airway Epithelial Cells

Yang Cai et al.

Summary: Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in preventing calf lung infections, increasing macrophage numbers, reducing certain cytokine concentrations, and alleviating lung lesions, though without affecting clinical scores.

Neutrophils in respiratory viral infections

Cecilia Johansson et al.

Summary: Viral respiratory infections can cause severe diseases, especially in vulnerable populations like infants and the elderly. Neutrophils are important immune cells that play a role in host defense, but their exact role in viral infections, which replicate intracellularly, is still unclear. Tight regulation of neutrophils is necessary in the lungs to prevent damage to host tissues.
