Electroconvulsive Therapy Pulse Amplitude and Clinical Outcomes

Christopher C. Abbott et al.

Summary: This study found that in acute ECT series, depression outcomes improved in the 700 and 800 mA arms compared to the 600 mA arm, while secondary cognitive outcomes showed cognitive impairment in the 800 mA arm.

Volume of hippocampal subregions and clinical improvement following electroconvulsive therapy in patients with depression

Krzysztof Gbyl et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the relationship between hippocampal volume changes and antidepressant effects of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Results showed that ECT led to significant volume increases in not only the dentate gyrus, but also other major hippocampal subregions. These volumetric increases may be indicators of a neurobiological process related to ECT's antidepressant effect.

Summary: After ECT, MDD patients show transient increases in deep grey matter volume, especially in the hippocampus and thalami. These increases subsequently decrease, particularly in ECT-responders.

Summary: ECT is considered the most effective acute treatment for otherwise treatment-resistant major depressive episodes, but its underlying mechanism of action remains largely unknown. Studies suggest that ECT affects cerebral neurotransmitters like GABA and glutamate. Literature search revealed reduction of N-acetyl aspartate as a key neurochemical change related to ECT.
