Vapor- and aerosol-phase atmospheric organic matter in urban air of the Midwest USA

Rosa M. Flores et al.

Summary: In this study, vapor-and aerosol-phase atmospheric organic matter were collected in East St. Louis, MO using the high-volume sampling method. The identified levels of hydrocarbon-like and oxygenated organic vapor and aerosol species were quantified, showing a wide range of concentrations. The molecular characterization and quantitation of these organic species will aid in understanding the formation of secondary organic aerosol precursors.

Effect of chemical structure on optical properties of secondary organic aerosols derived from C12 alkanes

Junling Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the optical properties of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) derived from several C-12 alkanes, finding that the structure of the alkanes affects the chemical composition and refractive index values of SOA. Additionally, low temperatures promoted oligomerization reactions, leading to further changes in refractive index values.

Intermediate volatile organic compounds emissions from vehicles under real world conditions

Jianyi Tang et al.

Summary: Real-world vehicle emission factors for total intermediate volatile organic compounds (IVOCs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from mixed fleets of vehicles in the Yangtze tunnel in Shanghai were quantified. Results indicate that IVOCs emitted from diesel vehicles are the main emission sources under real world conditions, with significant contributions to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation.

Identification of two main origins of intermediate-volatility organic compound emissions from vehicles in China through two-phase simultaneous characterization

Yuanxiang Liu et al.

Summary: IVOC emissions from gasoline and diesel vehicles were characterized in a study, showing that diesel vehicles had emission factors approximately 16 times those of gasoline vehicles, with IVOCs mainly concentrated in the particle phase. Vehicle fuel was identified as the main source of gas-phase IVOC emissions, while lubricating oil played a significant role in contributing to particle-phase IVOCs.

Humidity Dependence of the Condensational Growth of α-Pinene Secondary Organic Aerosol Particles

Yiming Qin et al.

Summary: The influence of relative humidity on the condensational growth of organic aerosol particles was investigated in this study. Higher RH resulted in faster particle growth, with the particle growth being influenced by factors such as diffusivities within the particles.

Introductory lecture: air quality in megacities

Luisa T. Molina

Summary: Urbanization leads to the growth of megacities, where intense activities contribute to high levels of air pollutants that affect human health and climate. While progress has been made in understanding and reducing air pollution, more research and international collaboration are needed to address the complex processes and challenges in improving air quality in megacities.

Estimation and dispersion analysis of shipping emissions in Bandirma Port, Turkey

S. Levent Kuzu et al.

Summary: Ships emit pollutants near residential and commercial areas, impacting urban environments. A study in Bandirma found high emissions but lower ground-level concentrations compared to other ports in the area, with meteorology playing a role in pollutant dispersion. Administrative recommendations were proposed to manage the environmental impact of emissions.
