Impact of parameterizing the turbulent orographic form drag on convection-permitting simulations of winds and precipitation over South China during the 2019 pre-summer rainy season

Haile Xue et al.

Summary: The implementation of the turbulent orographic form drag (TOFD) parameterization in the WRF model with a 3 km grid spacing led to significant improvements in surface wind and precipitation forecasts over South China. By comparing the results with or without TOFD parameterization, it was found that the seasonal mean RMSE and bias of the surface wind decreased by over 7% and 5% respectively. Low-level wind convergence and increased precipitation in South China during the daytime were observed as a result of the impact of TOFD on low-level wind and precipitation.

Validation of satellite-retrieved CCN based on a cruise campaign over the polluted Northwestern Pacific ocean

Yichuan Wang et al.

Summary: This study introduces and validates a methodology for satellite retrievals of cloud condensation nuclei in shallow marine boundary layer clouds, demonstrating good accuracy in both clean and polluted regions. By comparing satellite retrievals with surface-measured CCNs, this methodology shows potential in quantifying CCN, cloud microphysical properties, and their relationships, which is beneficial for reducing the uncertainty of radiation forcing from aerosol-cloud interactions.

Variability of aerosol-cloud interactions induced by different cloud droplet nucleation schemes

D. Y. Chang et al.

Summary: The choice of cloud droplet nucleation (CDN) scheme has a significant impact on estimated cloud radiative effects, especially in regions with high anthropogenic fine particle pollution. Tuning parameters can restrict the variability induced by different CDN schemes in simulating climate, while regional sensitivity is crucial for optimal climate simulation.

Assessment of the vertical distribution of speciated aerosol absorption over South Asia using spaceborne LIDAR and ground-based observations

Summary: This study estimated the shortwave radiative effects of absorbing aerosols over the Indian landmass using a combination of spaceborne and ground-based observations, finding that pre-monsoon aerosol loading is mainly influenced by mineral dust and high aerosol warming within the planetary boundary layer is mainly caused by carbonaceous aerosols.

A new CCN activation parameterization and its potential influences on aerosol indirect effects

Yuan Wang et al.

Summary: Unactivated particles mixed in cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) measurements can lead to inaccuracies in parameterization, especially in Eastern China where factors like lower temperature, lower aerosol hygroscopicity, and closer resemblance to coastal aerosol particle size distribution contribute to a higher proportion of unactivated particles in CCN measurements. A new, better-fitting, two-parameter activation parameterization is proposed to better predict CCN concentration at low supersaturation conditions, reducing overestimation of aerosol indirect effects in models.

Characteristics of CCN activation and cloud microphysics over the east coast of India during the Northeast Monsoon onset

Mercy Varghese et al.

Summary: Airborne observations during the Northeast Monsoon onset in 2011 as part of CAIPEEX were used to connect aerosol activation properties with cloud microphysics. The study revealed significant spatial variability in aerosol spectrum, CCN activation characteristics, and cloud droplet spectral properties between coastal and inland locations, indicating that coastal clouds were equally polluted as inland clouds.
