Evaluation and improvement study of the Planetary Boundary-Layer schemes during a high PM2.5 episode in a core city of BTH region, China

Jianbo Yang et al.

Summary: Accurate depiction of Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) processes is crucial for meteorological and air quality simulations. This study evaluates the sensitivity of model performance to various PBL schemes and turbulence parameters using the WRF-Chem model for simulating a winter haze episode in Tianjin, China. The results indicate that the MYJ scheme performs better overall in comparison to other schemes, but still shows deficiencies in distinguishing the intensity of turbulent mixing during different pollution stages.

The impacts of the atmospheric boundary layer on regional haze in North China

Qianhui Li et al.

Summary: An intensive atmospheric boundary layer experiment was conducted on the North China Plain in 2019, discussing the impact of regional ABL structure on haze pollution and the relationship between ABL height and aerosol accumulation layer depth. Weak wind layers contribute to pollutant accumulation while low-level jets promote pollutant removal, resulting in uneven spatial distribution of haze in the region.

Comparative Numerical Study of PM2.5 in Exit-and-Entrance Areas Associated with Transboundary Transport over China, Japan, and Korea

Cheol-Hee Kim et al.

Summary: The study conducted year-long simulations of PM2.5 over Northeast Asia in 2013 using three regional air quality models, revealing significant biases in the results. Among the four chemical components of PM2.5, the largest inter-model variability was observed in organic carbon (OC), followed by discrepancies in nitrate (NO3-).
