Droplet characteristics in monsoon clouds before rain as observed over a high altitude site in Western Ghats, India

P. P. Leena et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant variations in cloud droplet size distribution (CDSD) and microphysical properties prior to monsoon rain events, with both single and multi-mode patterns observed. Large cloud droplets were found in both single and multi-mode clouds, indicating the possible entrainment of aerosols leading to multi modes in the CDSD. The analysis also suggested higher warm rain depths (D*) during multi-mode cases based on observed rain event duration.

Cloud and aerosol characteristics during dry and wet days of southwest monsoon over the rain shadow region of Western Ghats, India

Mercy Varghese et al.

Summary: This study presents in situ measurements of aerosol particle chemistry and cloud microphysics during the 2015 Cloud-Aerosol Interaction and Precipitation Enhancement Experiment (CAIPEEX) over the Western Ghats and its rain shadow region. The results show that Aitken mode aerosols are the major contributor to cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations, with distinct particle chemistry observed on dry and wet days. Additionally, internally mixed carbonaceous and iron/cobalt-rich aerosols from local pollution sources were found, suggesting boundary layer venting of aerosols on both wet and dry days.

Sensitivity of snowfall forecast over North China to ice crystal deposition/sublimation parameterizations in the WSM6 cloud microphysics scheme

Zhanshan Ma et al.

Summary: Ice-phase cloud microphysical processes are complex, and uncertainties remain in current microphysics parameterization schemes. Alternative ice crystal deposition/sublimation parameterizations were tested in a model, revealing sensitivity to snowfall overestimation and improved prediction accuracy in North China. Careful consideration of ICDS parameterizations is necessary due to uncertainties in cloud microphysics scheme development.

Distinct impacts on precipitation by aerosol radiative effect over three different megacity regions of eastern China

Yue Sun et al.

Summary: Aerosols have varying impacts on the start and peak times of precipitation in different regions, and different types of aerosols (absorbing vs. scattering) have different effects. Meteorological conditions, such as humidity and vertical wind shear, also play a role in modulating the effects of aerosols on precipitation.
