On the Misclassification of Dust as Cloud at an AERONET Site in the Sonoran Desert

Amato Evan et al.

Summary: In this study, it was demonstrated that during dust storms, measurements from a sun photometer at an AERONET site in the western Sonoran Desert are frequently misclassified as cloud contaminated by the network's processing algorithm. The study identified the various algorithmic tests that lead to this misclassification and discussed the physical reasons why dust typically fails those tests. A method utilizing measurements from a collocated ceilometer was presented as a solution to restoring these misclassified data, highlighting the challenges of operating an AERONET site in regions close to sources of airborne dust.

Credibility and statistical characteristics of CAMSRA and MERRA-2 AOD reanalysis products over the Sichuan Basin during 2003-2018

Hongbo Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the credibility of two long-term atmospheric composition reanalysis datasets in the Sichuan Basin, finding a slowing down of severe air pollution since 2012. CAMSRA showed good consistency with MODIS despite systematic overestimation. The uniform decreasing trend of the three datasets since 2012 supports the effects of tough emissions reduction policy.

Dust Transport from Inland Australia and Its Impact on Air Quality and Health on the Eastern Coast of Australia during the February 2019 Dust Storm

Emilie Aragnou et al.

Summary: This study focused on a dust storm event in February 2019 in New South Wales, Australia, using the WRF-Chem model to study dust formation, dispersion, and transport. The results show that although PM2.5 concentrations in some areas were very high, population exposure was low, with health impacts similar in magnitude to biomass burning events in 2016, but with higher respiratory disease hospitalization rates for the dust event.

Impact of Desert Dust Events on the Cardiovascular Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Alberto Dominguez-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Through a systematic review and meta-analysis, this study found that inhalation of desert dust significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular mortality, especially on the day of exposure and the following day. The results of the study show that exposure to every 10 mu g/m(3) of desert dust increases the risk of cardiovascular mortality by 2%.

ModIs Dust AeroSol (MIDAS): a global fine-resolution dust optical depth data set

Antonis Gkikas et al.

Summary: Monitoring and describing the spatiotemporal variability in dust aerosols is crucial for understanding their effects, feedbacks, and impacts within the Earth system. The MIDAS data set provides global daily dust optical depth data at fine spatial resolution over a 15-year period, combining satellite AOD retrievals with DOD-to-AOD ratios from reanalysis to derive DOD on the MODIS native grid. The uncertainties of the data set are taken into account for estimation of total DOD uncertainty, with good agreement and some deviations when compared to other monitoring sources.

Long-term multi-source data analysis about the characteristics of aerosol optical properties and types over Australia

Xingchuan Yang et al.

Summary: The spatiotemporal distributions of aerosol optical properties and major aerosol types over Australia show strong seasonal variations and spatial heterogeneity. Most sites exhibit increasing trends in aerosol optical depth (AOD) and decreasing trends in Angstrom exponent (AE). Different regions in Australia have distinct characteristics in terms of major aerosol types, with mixed aerosols dominating all seasons.
