Assessments of Doppler Velocity Errors of EarthCARE Cloud Profiling Radar Using Global Cloud System Resolving Simulations: Effects of Doppler Broadening and Folding

Yuichiro Hagihara et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of horizontal integration and unfolding methods on reducing Doppler measurement errors and simulated Doppler velocities in cirrus cloud and precipitation cases. The results showed that Doppler errors can be significantly reduced by applying appropriate horizontal integration and unfolding methods.

Tropical Cirrus in Global Storm-Resolving Models: 2. Cirrus Life Cycle and Top-of-Atmosphere Radiative Fluxes

S. M. Turbeville et al.

Summary: This study investigates the representation of tropical cirrus in global storm-resolving models, which have higher resolution and explicit convection. Model differences in cirrus populations dominate over regional differences, likely driven by subgrid processes. Understanding these model differences is essential in predicting future climates accurately.

Improved Representation of Low-Level Mixed-Phase Clouds in a Global Cloud-System-Resolving Simulation

Akira T. Noda et al.

Summary: The new microphysics scheme improves the representation of low-level mixed-phase clouds in climate models by addressing issues such as supercooled water generation and cloud water conversion. It results in a more accurate simulation of cloud systems and a better understanding of cloud phase regimes, supporting the development of more complex feedback processes. Additionally, improvements in seasonal variation of shortwave radiation and cloud radiative effects have been identified.

Prediction Skill of the Boreal Summer Intra-Seasonal Oscillation in Global Non-hydrostatic Atmospheric Model Simulations with Explicit Cloud Microphysics

Ryosuke Shibuya et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the prediction skill of the BSISO mode using a global Non-hydrostatic Icosahedral Atmospheric Model with explicit cloud microphysics and a grid spacing of 14 km. It found that the model had an overall BSISO prediction skill of approximately 24 days, with slightly higher skill when BSISO events began in the initial phases 7 to 1. The model successfully simulated the phase speed and amplitude evolution of the BSISO, but showed slower propagation speed during phases 6 and 7 and significant decay in amplitude during phases 8 to 1.

Near-Global Three-Dimensional Hail Signals Detected by Using GPM-DPR Observations

Tatsuya Seiki

Summary: This study presents a method for detecting three-dimensional hail distribution using GPM Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) products and atmospheric temperature data. By analyzing radar reflectivity and dual-frequency ratio values, the study successfully classifies hydrometeors and establishes thresholds for ZKu and DFR values at different temperature ranges. The study also evaluates these thresholds in 74 hailstorm cases and proposes filters to remove melting snow and rain contamination, leading to better detection of deep hailstorms.

The Nonhydrostatic ICosahedral Atmospheric Model for CMIP6 HighResMIP simulations (NICAM16-S): experimental design, model description, and impacts of model updates

Summary: NICAM16-S simulations showed improvements in various aspects such as ice water content, high cloud amount, surface air temperature over the Arctic region, and the location and strength of zonal mean subtropical jet. However, some long-standing biases still exist or have worsened in some cases, indicating the need for further understanding and upgrades in model schemes and parameter settings, as well as enhancement in horizontal and vertical resolutions.
