Simultaneous Constraints on the Star Formation History and Nucleosynthesis of Sculptor dSph

Mithi A. C. de los Reyes et al.

Summary: Using up to seven stellar abundance ratios, this study places observational constraints on the star formation histories of Local Group dSphs, with Sculptor dSph as a test case. The best-fit model suggests Sculptor dSph has an ancient SFH with a relatively short total star formation duration of around 0.9 Gyr, compared to previous estimates. The study also explores the nucleosynthesis of individual elements and finds consistency with sub-M (Ch) Type Ia supernova models and the requirement of prompt and delayed r-process events to reproduce observed trends.

The kinematic properties of Milky Way stellar halo populations

James M. M. Lane et al.

Summary: In the Gaia era, stellar kinematics are extensively used to study Galactic halo stellar populations and search for halo structures. This study evaluates different kinematic spaces in separating radially anisotropic from isotropic halo populations, finding the scaled action space to be superior. A new selection criterion is proposed for the radially anisotropic Gaia-Enceladus merger remnant with a high sample purity of 86%. The study also highlights the impact of selection biases on the distribution of samples and provides recommendations for future use of stellar kinematics in studying the Galactic stellar halo.

The GALAH Survey: chemical tagging and chrono-chemodynamics of accreted halo stars with GALAH+DR3 and Gaia eDR3

Sven Buder et al.

Summary: With the use of Gala astrometry, a method has been developed to identify massive accreted systems in the Galaxy based on their unique dynamical signatures. In this study, the Goia-Sausage-Enceladus (GSE) system is identified as an early "building block" with a high virial mass. By analyzing the chemical properties of stars and applying Gaussian mixture models, the GSE component is successfully separated from the background stars. The findings provide valuable insights into the formation of the Milky Way.

The S2 stream: the shreds of a primitive dwarf galaxy

David S. Aguado et al.

Summary: The S2 stream, a kinematically cold stream in the Galactic disc, is likely part of a disrupted dwarf galaxy, as confirmed by chemical analysis of its stars. The abundance patterns observed in S2 suggest a complex origin and evolutionary history, with trends indicating the need for modest star formation efficiency and low wind efficiency in the progenitor galaxy.

Summary: Gaia EDR3 is the early installment of the third data release from the Gaia project, providing astrometry and photometry for 1.8 billion sources brighter than magnitude 21, along with radial velocities from Gaia DR2. The data processing precision and homogeneity have significantly improved compared to the previous version, with additional information on celestial bodies and an updated celestial reference frame.

Reconstructing the Last Major Merger of the Milky Way with the H3 Survey

Rohan P. Naidu et al.

Summary: Several lines of evidence suggest that the Milky Way underwent a major merger with the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus galaxy at z similar to 2. By using data analysis and simulations, researchers have revealed the process of GSE galaxy entering the Milky Way on a retrograde orbit, reconstructed the merger event, and made predictions about the shape of the inner halo and retrograde streams in the outer halo.

Two Sites of r-process Production Assessed on the Basis of the Age-tagged Abundances of Solar Twins

Takuji Tsujimoto

Summary: The study identifies the Galactic bulge as the birthplace of the oldest solar twins. It also suggests the presence of two distinct sites for r-process production in the inner Galactic region, rather than a sole site as previously hypothesized. The relation between [r-process/Fe] and R(GC) hints at a complex production mechanism involving short-lived massive stars and neutron star mergers with different delay times.

Evidence from APOGEE for the presence of a major building block of the halo buried in the inner Galaxy

Danny Horta et al.

Summary: Evidence from APOGEE suggests the presence of a new metal-poor stellar structure near the Galactic Center, possibly associated with an accretion event in the early Milky Way. This structure, termed the Inner Galaxy Structure (IGS), displays chemical composition similarities to low-mass Milky Way satellites and is dynamically detached from more metal-rich populations in the inner Galaxy. Comparisons with cosmological simulations indicate a progenitor system for the IGS with a stellar mass approximately double that of the Gaia-Enceladus/Sausage system. The ratio of accreted to in situ stars within the metal-poor bulge sample is estimated to be between 1:3 and 1:2, in line with predictions from various cosmological numerical simulations.

The cosmic merger rate density of compact objects: impact of star formation, metallicity, initial mass function, and binary evolution

Filippo Santoliquido et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the redshift distribution of binary black hole, black hole-neutron star binary, and binary neutron star mergers, investigating the impact of factors such as star formation rate density, metallicity evolution, and common envelope on merger rates. The results show that the merger rate of binary neutron stars is almost insensitive to metallicity, making them an ideal test bed for constraining uncertain binary evolution processes.

Origin of the heaviest elements: The rapid neutron-capture process

John J. Cowan et al.

Summary: The rapid neutron-capture process (r-process) is responsible for about half of the heavy elements found in nature, but uncertainties and open questions remain. Studies suggest that the production of the majority of heavy r-process elements may be associated with neutron-rich conditions, such as neutron star mergers.

R-process enhancements of Gaia-Enceladus in GALAH DR3

Tadafumi Matsuno et al.

Summary: The main site of production of r-process elements remains uncertain, despite recent observations of a neutron star merger. Comparing r-process abundances in different environments offers observational constraints on the properties of these sites. Gaia-Enceladus stars exhibit higher ratios of [Eu/Mg] compared to in situ stars, possibly indicating a different origin of r-process elements in these populations.

Binary neutron star merger in common envelope jets supernovae

Noam Soker

Summary: The study explores a triple-star scenario in which two neutron stars enter a red supergiant star's envelope and spiral towards its core, leading to a CEJSN event. The event is powered by accretion discs and jets, staying luminous for months to years and potentially producing gravitational wave signals. This scenario may help address the issue of r-process nucleosynthesis in the early Universe related to NS-NS mergers.
