Production of Very Light Elements and Strontium in the Early Ejecta of Neutron Star Mergers

Albino Perego et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the production of very light elements (Z < 20) in binary neutron star mergers by combining detailed nucleosynthesis calculations with numerical relativity merger simulations. We found that hydrogen and helium are the most abundant light elements produced in the dynamical and spiral-wave wind ejecta. Synthetic spectra calculations suggest that detecting hydrogen and helium features in kilonova spectra is unlikely, but the possibility of observing helium lines a few days after merger is still possible for faint kilonovae or for luminous kilonovae ejecting large masses of helium.

Accurate flux calibration of GW170817: is the X-ray counterpart on the rise?

E. Troja et al.

Summary: The X-ray emission from the GW170817 gravitational wave transient is described as non-thermal afterglow radiation produced by a structured relativistic jet viewed off-axis, and continues to be detected 3.3 years after the merger. While there is no evidence of an increase in X-ray flux, a growing tension between observations and the jet model is confirmed, prompting the need for further observations at radio and X-ray wavelengths to break the degeneracy between models.

3D magnetized jet break-out from neutron-star binary merger ejecta: afterglow emission from the jet and the ejecta

Antonios Nathanail et al.

Summary: The study uses 3D simulations to model jet breakout from binary neutron-star mergers and confirms previous results from 2D simulations. In addition to describing the structure of the relativistic outflow, the non-thermal afterglow emission is calculated, observer angle is inferred, and parameter space for both thermal kilonova emission and unobserved non-thermal emission is constrained through the study.

Afterglow Constraints on the Viewing Angle of Binary Neutron Star Mergers and Determination of the Hubble Constant

Ehud Nakar et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the relationship between the viewing angle and jet opening angle in binary neutron star mergers. It presents a simple ratio formula and explains the inconsistency in previous research results. Various methods, such as VLBI measurements and afterglow transitions, are proposed to estimate the viewing angle and jet opening angle, with implications for measurements of the Hubble constant.

Observations of a radio-bright, X-ray obscured GRS 1915+105

S. E. Motta et al.

Summary: GRS 1915+105, a Galactic black hole transient, has been active since its X-ray outburst in 1992. Recent radio and X-ray data indicate a transition to a low-luminosity canonical hard state with heavy X-ray absorption/obscuration, potentially resembling super-Eddington states seen in X-ray binaries SS433 or V404 Cyg. The radio-X-ray correlation suggests that a local absorber may be hiding the accretion processes responsible for the observed radio flaring.

From Neutrino- to Photon-cooled in Three Years: Can Fallback Accretion Explain the X-Ray Excess in GW170817?

Brian D. Metzger et al.

Summary: Excess X-ray emission from the neutron star merger GW170817, detected 3.4 years post-merger, is likely from accretion of disk wind ejecta onto the newly unshrouded black hole remnant. Hydrodynamic simulations show that the suppressed BH accretion rate prior to the sub-Eddington transition is key to avoid overproducing the kilonova luminosity via reprocessing.

Continued Radio Observations of GW170817 3.5 yr Post-merger

Arvind Balasubramanian et al.

Summary: Researchers conducted new radio observations of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 using the VLA, finding no evidence for a late-time radio rebrightening and suggesting a steep energy-speed distribution of the kilonova ejecta. The results may have implications for the understanding of kilonovae and highlight the need for continued radio-to-X-ray monitoring to test different scenarios.

Dynamical ejecta synchrotron emission as a possible contributor to the changing behaviour of GRB170817A afterglow

Vsevolod Nedora et al.

Summary: In the past 3 years, the fading non-thermal emission from GW170817 has been consistent with afterglow powered by synchrotron radiation produced by the interaction of structured jet with the ambient medium. Recent observations in the X-ray band show changes in temporal and spectral behavior. The new observations are compatible with non-thermal emission from the fast tail of dynamical ejecta of binary neutron star merger simulations.

Summary: The study of the nebular phase of lanthanide-rich ejecta from a neutron star merger provides insights into the cooling mechanisms and stability of ionization and thermal balance over time. Both permitted and forbidden lines contribute to the cooling rate of Ndii and Ndiii, with the kinetic temperature and ionization degree stabilizing after a thermalization break. The emission-line nebular spectrum of pure Nd ejecta exhibits distinctive peak structures.

Signatures of deconfined quark phases in binary neutron star mergers

Aviral Prakash et al.

Summary: The study reveals that quark production in neutron star mergers occurs over a wide range of temperatures and densities due to matter crossing the phase boundary. The softening of the equation of state caused by the phase transition leads to more compact merger remnants and earlier collapse to black holes. The phase transition is reflected in the postmerger gravitational wave signals in terms of duration, amplitude, and peak frequency.

The Fate of the Merger Remnant in GW170817 and Its Imprint on the Jet Structure

Ariadna Murguia-Berthier et al.

Summary: Research indicates that the neutron star binary merger detected in the first gravitational wave GW170817 is a possible progenitor of short gamma-ray bursts. Numerical simulations show that the angular energy distribution of the jet primarily depends on the ratio between the jet lifetime and the time it takes for the merger remnant to collapse. By using simulations, the time it took for the merger remnant in GW170817 to collapse into a black hole can be constrained based on the angular structure of the jet inferred from afterglow observations.

Accretion-induced prompt black hole formation in asymmetric neutron star mergers, dynamical ejecta, and kilonova signals

Summary: New numerical relativity results of neutron star mergers have shown evidence of accretion-induced prompt collapse in high-mass-ratio binaries, leading to bright, red, and temporally extended kilonova emission. This suggests that prompt black hole mergers can generate bright electromagnetic counterparts, potentially allowing the binary mass ratio to be constrained from multimessenger observations.
