WASP: a software package for correctly characterizing the topological development of ribbon structures

Zachary Sierzega et al.

Summary: The paper introduces WASP software package which is used to characterize the topology of ribbon structures using the general twist-writhe decomposition, particularly through the quantity called polar writhe. The decomposition into local and non-local components provides additional information not given by alternative approaches, and is important for detecting specific structures like plectonemes. Well known alternative writhe expressions are demonstrated to be simplifications of the polar writhe measure.

A fundamental mechanism of solar eruption initiation

Chaowei Jiang et al.

Summary: Solar eruptions can be efficiently initiated in a single bipolar configuration through photospheric shearing motion alone, without the need of any additional special topology, as shown in fully three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations. Magnetic reconnection expels the entire arcade impulsively, forming a fast-expanding twisted flux rope with a highly turbulent reconnecting region underneath. The simplicity and efficacy of this scenario argue strongly for its fundamental importance in the initiation of solar eruptions.
