Localizing FRBs through VLBI with the Algonquin Radio Observatory 10 m Telescope

T. Cassanelli et al.

Summary: The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME)/FRB experiment has successfully detected fast radio bursts (FRBs) with the help of its sensitivity and wide field of view, but its low resolution hinders accurate localization to host galaxies. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) can provide a solution to this localization challenge for non-repeating events. By refurbishing a 10 m radio dish at the Algonquin Radio Observatory in Canada, a testbed for VLBI experiments with a resolution of approximately 30 mas has been developed. The system's performance and localization procedure have been validated using single pulses from the Crab pulsar, and the project has successfully detected a non-repeating FRB simultaneously observed in both the CHIME and the Algonquin 10 m telescope.

The z-DM distribution of fast radio bursts

C. W. James et al.

Summary: We have developed a sophisticated model to investigate fast radio bursts (FRBs), considering various factors such as cosmological gas distribution, host galaxy contributions, and observational biases. Our analysis provides the most detailed account of observational biases and significantly improves the accuracy and precision of FRB observations. Based on the data from ASKAP and Parkes, we present the best-fitting FRB population parameters and discuss the expected and fitted distributions in redshift, dispersion measure, and signal to noise. Our results suggest that the highest-dispersion measure events detected in the unlocalized Parkes and ASKAP samples are unlikely to be the most distant. This study highlights the importance of localized FRBs for understanding the DM-z relation and points out the limitations in our analysis, such as uncertainties in FRB spectral behavior and sensitivity response of search experiments, as well as the treatment of the repeating population and luminosity function.

Stella Koch Ocker et al.

Summary: The repeating fast radio burst FRB 20190520B is localized to a nearby galaxy. The observed dispersion measure and scattering phenomena provide support for a novel technique for estimating FRB redshifts and are consistent with previous findings.

The host galaxy and persistent radio counterpart of FRB 20201124A

Vikram Ravi et al.

Summary: The physical properties of fast radio burst (FRB) host galaxies provide important clues towards the nature of FRB sources. By studying the identified 16 FRB hosts, it is found that they span a wide range in mass and specific star formation rate, suggesting the existence of a ubiquitously occurring progenitor object. In addition, localization of FRBs enables effective searches for associated multiwavelength and multi-time-scale counterparts, which is crucial for understanding the origin of FRBs.

A repeating fast radio burst source in a globular cluster

F. Kirsten et al.

Summary: The fast radio burst FRB 20200120E is reported to originate from a globular cluster in the galaxy M81, which challenges previous models that invoke young magnetars as the source of FRBs. Instead, it is proposed that FRB 20200120E may come from a highly magnetized neutron star formed through the collapse of a white dwarf or the merger of compact stars in a binary system.

Burst timescales and luminosities as links between young pulsars and fast radio bursts

K. Nimmo et al.

Summary: Recent observational measurements of the nearby fast radio burst FRB 20200120E connect these extreme extragalactic transients with studies of Galactic neutron stars. The observational results of FRB suggest that FRB 20200120E bridges the gap between known Galactic young pulsars and magnetars and the more distant extragalactic FRBs, indicating a common magnetically powered emission mechanism across various timescales and luminosities.

The First CHIME/FRB Fast Radio Burst Catalog

Mandana Amiri et al.

Summary: This study presents a catalog of 536 fast radio bursts detected by the CHIME/FRB Project over a one-year period, providing insights into the FRB population. The research shows consistency in sky locations and dispersion measures between repeaters and apparent nonrepeaters, while also highlighting differences in intrinsic temporal width and spectral bandwidth. Additionally, the study reveals the population properties of FRBs and conducts an absolute calibration of selection effects.

The fast radio burst dispersion measure distribution

W. R. Arcus et al.

Summary: The study compared the dispersion measure statistics of FRBs detected by ASKAP and Parkes telescopes, finding similar patterns in their data. By modeling the DM distribution and fitting the population parameters, conclusions about the spectral index and burst energy distribution were drawn, revealing the impact of redshift evolutionary models on the parameters.

Constraining Galaxy Halos from the Dispersion and Scattering of Fast Radio Bursts and Pulsars

Stella Koch Ocker et al.

Summary: Fast radio bursts can be scattered by various ionized gas mediums, with different contributions depending on their properties and configurations. Precise measurements of scattering on FRBs can provide insights into density fluctuations. The study suggests that the scattering contribution from the Milky Way halo to FRBs is minimal.

A Nearby Repeating Fast Radio Burst in the Direction of M81

M. Bhardwaj et al.

Summary: We report the discovery of FRB 20200120E, a repeating fast radio burst with a low dispersion measure, detected by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment FRB project. The FRB is located near the spiral galaxy M81 at a distance of 3.6 Mpc. Several cataloged M81 sources and a radio point source have been found within the localization region of the FRB.

A High-resolution View of Fast Radio Burst Host Environments

Alexandra G. Mannings et al.

Summary: Observations of eight fast radio burst host galaxies with the Hubble Space Telescope show that they are typically located in fainter regions of their host galaxies but overall follow a certain pattern, distinct from other transient populations with known progenitors. Most of the FRBs are not in regions of elevated star formation rates or stellar mass surface densities. Additionally, five out of eight FRB hosts exhibit clear spiral arm features.

Chromatic periodic activity down to 120 megahertz in a fast radio burst

Ines Pastor-Marazuela et al.

Summary: Fast radio burst FRB 20180916B repeats with a periodicity of 16 days and emits down to a frequency of 120 MHz, showing a frequency-dependent activity window. The results suggest that some FRBs are found in 'clean' environments without absorption of low-frequency radiation, indicating possible scenarios of low-frequency FRB emission escaping local medium.
