Substructure at High Speed. I. Inferring the Escape Velocity in the Presence of Kinematic Substructure

Lina Necib et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a strategy that takes into account the presence of kinematic substructure and models the tail of the velocity distribution as a sum of multiple power laws. The robustness of this method is demonstrated using mock data and data from Milky Way simulations. In a companion paper, the new measurement of the escape velocity and the mass of the Milky Way using Gaia eDR3 data is presented.

Gaia Early Data Release 3 Summary of the contents and survey properties

A. G. A. Brown et al.

Summary: Gaia EDR3 is the early installment of the third data release from the Gaia project, providing astrometry and photometry for 1.8 billion sources brighter than magnitude 21, along with radial velocities from Gaia DR2. The data processing precision and homogeneity have significantly improved compared to the previous version, with additional information on celestial bodies and an updated celestial reference frame.

Determination of the escape velocity of the Milky Way using a halo sample selected based on proper motion

Helmer H. Koppelman et al.

Summary: The researcher utilized data from the Gaia mission to select 107 halo stars and estimate the escape velocity of the Milky Way, thereby constraining the total mass of the galaxy. The results suggest that the true escape velocity of the Milky Way is likely closer to 550 km/s.

Gaia EDR3 in 6D: searching for unbound stars in the galaxy

Tommaso Marchetti

Summary: The European Space Agency satellite Gaia's latest data release provides coordinates, parallaxes, and proper motions for nearly 1.47 billion sources in the Milky Way. Through precise measurements and calculations, possible hyper-runaway star candidates were identified, requiring follow-up with ground-based telescopes for confirmation.

Gaia Early Data Release 3 Updated radial velocities from Gaia DR2

G. M. Seabroke et al.

Summary: The Gaia EDR3 does not include new radial velocities which will be released in DR3, but to make EDR3 more useful, sources with DR2 radial velocities are matched to EDR3. The aims are to investigate a list of potentially contaminated DR2 radial velocities and to match DR2 sources to EDR3. Results show that EDR3 has improved reliability compared to DR2 and lessons learned will enhance future data releases.
