Discovery of a Double-detonation Thermonuclear Supernova Progenitor

Thomas Kupfer et al.

Summary: We present the discovery of a new double-detonation progenitor system composed of a hot subdwarf B binary and a white dwarf companion. By analyzing the spectroscopic observations and light curve fits, the physical parameters of the system were estimated and the future evolution was predicted. These findings are important for understanding the formation mechanisms of double-detonation progenitor systems and thermonuclear supernovae.

A quantitative in-depth analysis of the prototype sdB plus BD system SDSS J08205+0008 revisited in the Gaia era

V Schaffenroth et al.

Summary: Subdwarf B stars are core-helium-burning stars located on the extreme horizontal branch (EHB), formed through extensive mass loss on the red giant branch. The system J08205+0008 with a hot subdwarf and substellar companion was analyzed in-depth using high-quality data and various methods, leading to precise constraints on the characteristics of both stars. The hot subdwarf was found to have a mass of 0.39-0.50 Solar masses, while the companion is likely a massive brown dwarf with a mass of 0.061-0.071 Solar masses.

Looking into the cradle of the grave: J22564-5910, a potential young post-merger hot subdwarf

Joris Vos et al.

Summary: The discovery of the new hot subdwarf J22564-5910 shows evidence of gas present in the system and unique spectral features. Through analysis of photometry, spectra, and light curves, researchers suggest the likely presence of a magnetic field and gas features around the sdB. This object is the first of its kind and could provide valuable insights into merger theories and the formation of magnetic white dwarfs.

The first heavy-metal hot subdwarf composite binary SB 744

P. Nemeth et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the chemical composition and Galactic kinematics of the spectroscopic binary SB 744, revealing it as an old Population II system with a heavy-metal subclass hot subdwarf star and super-solar lead abundances. The presence of fluorine suggests a past hierarchical triple system or single-star evolution through late core helium flash and atmospheric mixing to explain the observed abundances.

EC 22536-5304: a lead-rich and metal-poor long-period binary

M. Dorsch et al.

Summary: The research revealed that the helium-burning hot subdwarf star EC 22536-5304 is actually a binary star with a metal-poor subdwarf F-type companion. Analysis of spectra and atmospheric parameters showed that the lead abundance is even higher than previously thought, indicating the possibility that this enrichment is caused by the other component in the binary system.

Hot Subdwarf Atmospheric Parameters, Kinematics, and Origins Based on 1587 Hot Subdwarf Stars Observed in Gaia DR2 and LAMOST DR7

Summary: Based on Gaia and LAMOST data, we studied 1587 hot subdwarf stars, determining their atmospheric parameters and Galactic positions. Using a He classification scheme, we categorized the stars into four groups based on their helium content, indicating potentially distinct origins. The distribution of these hot subdwarfs in the Milky Way also shows significant differences, suggesting varying evolutionary paths.

Summary: Subdwarf B stars are core-helium-burning stars located on the extreme horizontal branch, requiring extensive mass loss on the red giant branch for their formation. Through in-depth analysis of the system, chemical abundances, rotational velocity, and radius constraints of the hot subdwarf and its companion were derived. The study suggests that the companion is most likely a massive brown dwarf based on various observational methods.
