Assessment of [Fe/H] determinations for FGK stars in spectroscopic surveys

C. Soubiran et al.

Summary: The iron abundance [Fe/H] in FGK-type stars is important in stellar and galactic physics, and the increasing number of stars with measured [Fe/H] values from spectroscopic surveys requires understanding the differences in methodologies. This study aims to compare [Fe/H] determinations from different spectroscopic surveys and analyze their offsets and trends with other parameters. The surveys tend to overestimate low metallicities and underestimate high metallicities, with good performance in the intermediate metallicity range.

Gaia Early Data Release 3 The astrometric solution

L. Lindegren et al.

Summary: Gaia EDR3 provides full astrometric data for 1.468 billion sources, including 585 million with five-parameter solutions and 882 million with six parameters, as well as mean positions at J2016.0 for an additional 344 million sources. Five-parameter solutions are generally more accurate and available for 93% of sources brighter than the 17th magnitude, with median uncertainties of 0.02-0.03 mas for parallax and proper motion at G = 9-14, and around 0.5 mas at G = 20. Extensive characterization of the solutions' statistical properties is provided, including the estimated angular power spectrum of parallax bias from quasars.

Gaia Early Data Release 3: Modelling and calibration of Gaia's point and line spread functions

N. Rowell et al.

Summary: The unprecedented astrometric precision of the Gaia mission relies on accurate estimates of the locations of sources in the Gaia data stream, ultimately performed by point spread function (PSF) fitting. Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) will use a PSF calibration that models several of the strongest dependences, leading to significantly reduced systematic errors. The PSF calibration shows strong time and colour dependences that accurately reproduce the varying state of the Gaia astrometric instrument, with further improvements expected in future data releases.

Gaia Early Data Release 3 Parallax bias versus magnitude, colour, and position

L. Lindegren et al.

Summary: The study found that the parallax bias in Gaia EDR3 data is dependent on factors such as magnitude, color, and ecliptic latitude of the source in a non-trivial way. While a definitive method for correcting the parallax is not yet possible, tentative expressions have been provided for researchers to use at their discretion.

Estimating Distances from Parallaxes. V. Geometric and Photogeometric Distances to 1.47 Billion Stars in Gaia Early Data Release 3

C. A. L. Bailer-Jones et al.

Summary: Stellar distances are essential in astrophysics, and the publication of 1.47 billion stellar parallaxes from Gaia significantly contributes to this field. Despite challenges with faint or distant stars, a probabilistic approach using a three-dimensional model of the Galaxy has been developed to estimate geometric and photogeometric distances. Photogeometric estimates generally show higher accuracy and precision compared to geometric distances, especially for stars with poor parallaxes, and are provided in a publicly available catalog.

Summary: This article presents the flux tables of spectrophotometric standard stars (SPSS) used for calibrating Gaia DR2 and (E)DR3 data releases, as well as literature spectra of 60 additional stars that did not meet the criteria to be SPSS. The agreement between SPSS and ground-based observations is good, and the uncertainties already meet initial requirements. The Passband Validation Library (PVL) contains stars of extreme spectral types, which helped minimize systematic effects in previous Gaia releases.

A catalogue of white dwarfs in Gaia EDR3

N. P. Gentile Fusillo et al.

Summary: In this study, a catalogue of white dwarf candidates was presented based on Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) and compared with samples from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The distribution of these candidates was mapped in the Gaia absolute magnitude-colour space, and a probability of being a white dwarf was calculated for over 1.3 million sources. High-confidence white dwarf candidates were selected based on these calculations and stellar parameters were estimated using synthetic atmospheric models. The catalogue was found to have an overall completeness limit of 93% for white dwarfs with G <= 20 mag and effective temperature (T-eff) > 7000 K at high Galactic latitudes.
