Gaia-ESO Survey: Role of magnetic activity and starspots on pre-main-sequence lithium evolution

E. Franciosini et al.

Summary: This study tested a new set of pre-main-sequence models that include radius inflation due to the presence of starspots or to magnetic inhibition of convection. The results indicate that a reduced convection efficiency and effective surface spot coverage are required to reproduce the observed color-magnitude diagram and lithium depletion pattern in young star clusters. Older clusters are consistent with standard models, but increasing spot coverage appears to improve the sequence of M-type stars and explain the observed spread in lithium abundances. The quality of Gaia-ESO data combined with Gaia allows for important insights into pre-main-sequence evolution.

The Gaia-ESO Survey: Target selection of open cluster stars&x22c6;

A. Bragaglia et al.

Summary: This article introduces the background and objectives of the Gaia-ESO Survey, as well as the work of three working groups involved in the survey. By selecting observation targets based on public and private photometry and using ground-based kinematic and astronomical data to define the positions of stellar evolution, the survey team has successfully collected the largest, most accurate, and most homogeneous spectroscopic dataset on open star clusters ever achieved.

The Gaia-ESO Survey: Membership probabilities for stars in 63 open and 7 globular clusters from 3D kinematics

R. J. Jackson et al.

Summary: Spectroscopy from the Gaia-ESO Survey has been combined with Gaia data to assign membership probabilities to targets towards 63 Galactic open clusters and 7 globular clusters. Most targets are identified as highly probable cluster members, and the inclusion of GES radial velocities helps reduce false positives. This study provides an ideal dataset for investigating the photometric and chemical properties of clusters.

Chamaeleon DANCe: Revisiting the stellar populations of Chamaeleon I and Chamaeleon II with Gaia-DR2 data

P. A. B. Galli et al.

Summary: This study uses the second data release of the Gaia space mission to expand the census of stars in the Chamaeleon clouds and revisit the properties of the stellar populations associated with Chamaeleon I and Chamaeleon II dark clouds. The research identifies 188 and 41 high-probability members in Cha I and Cha II, respectively, revealing differences in distance between the subgroups of Cha I and a higher proportion of disc-bearing stars in Cha II.

Atomic data for the Gaia-ESO Survey

U. Heiter et al.

Summary: The study discusses the use of atomic and molecular data for abundance analyses of FGK-type stars within the Gaia-ESO Survey from 2012 to 2019. An effort was made to create a common line list for different analysis groups to calculate synthetic spectra, with preference for experimental data over theoretical values. Recommendations for line broadening data and enhancing accuracy in abundance determinations were provided.

Summary: Gaia EDR3 is the early installment of the third data release from the Gaia project, providing astrometry and photometry for 1.8 billion sources brighter than magnitude 21, along with radial velocities from Gaia DR2. The data processing precision and homogeneity have significantly improved compared to the previous version, with additional information on celestial bodies and an updated celestial reference frame.

The Gaia-ESO survey: a lithium depletion boundary age for NGC 2232

A. S. Binks et al.

Summary: Astrometry and photometry data from Gaia, combined with spectroscopic data from the Gaia-ESO Survey, were used to identify the lithium depletion boundary in the young cluster NGC 2232. By comparing the location of the LDB in absolute color-magnitude diagrams with standard models, an age of 38 +/- 3 Myr was inferred. Models incorporating high levels of magnetic activity and starspot coverage fractions >50 percent showed the best agreement between LDB and CMD ages, particularly at ages of 45-50 Myr.

Lithium in NGC 2243 and NGC 104

M. Aoki et al.

Summary: The aim of the study was to determine the initial lithium content of two star clusters with similar metallicity but very different ages. By comparing lithium abundances of stars in the clusters and applying theoretical stellar models, the researchers found that NGC 2243 had a significantly higher initial lithium content than NGC 104. The results offer important insights for future theoretical developments in stellar evolution.

The Gaia-ESO survey: Mixing processes in low-mass stars traced by lithium abundance in cluster and field stars

L. Magrini et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate mixing processes in low-mass stars by observing the behavior of lithium surface abundance after the main sequence. It uses data from Gaia-ESO IDR6 and Gaia EDR3s to analyze main-sequence, sub-giant, and giant stars. The comparison with stellar evolution models shows that rotation-induced mixing and thermohaline instability are key factors affecting lithium abundance trends.

Gaia-ESO survey: Lithium abundances in open cluster Red Clump stars

Summary: The study found that about 35% of red clump (RC) stars have lithium abundances similar to or higher than red giant branch (RGB) stars, indicating a possible sign of fresh lithium production. However, lithium content in about 65% of RC giants could only be determined as upper limits, potentially hiding very low lithium content.

Intrinsic metallicity variation in the intermediate mass type II globular cluster NGC 1261

C. Munoz et al.

Summary: Research on GCs reveals that some Type II GCs exhibit intrinsic Fe abundance variations, and through specific cases, an analysis of metallicity shows different behaviors among different categories of stars. Light Elements in the Universe

Sofia Randich et al.

Summary: Light elements such as lithium, beryllium, and boron, as well as carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, play a crucial role in investigating various issues in modern astrophysics. Precise measurements of these elements are challenging, but advances in instrumentation have allowed for high-quality abundance determinations in stars of different types, providing new insights and raising new questions. Opportunities for further advancement in understanding light-element patterns and evolution in the Universe are on the horizon with the development of new generation instrumentation.

The Gaia-ESO Survey: Oxygen Abundance in the Galactic Thin and Thick Disks*

Mariagrazia Franchini et al.

Summary: The study analyzed oxygen abundances of a stellar sample representative of two major Galactic populations, revealing systematic differences between thin and thick disk stars in terms of oxygen abundance and metallicity. The study also found a smooth correlation of oxygen-to-magnesium ratio with age in both populations, suggesting it as a good proxy of stellar ages within the Milky Way. Additionally, thin disk members with lower metallicities displayed carbon-to-oxygen ratios smaller than the solar value, indicating a possible outward migration of the Sun from lower Galactocentric radii.
