Comparison of two devices for automated oxygen control in preterm infants: a randomised crossover trial

Hylke H. Salverda et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of two different automated oxygen control devices on target range (TR) time and occurrence of hypoxaemic and hyperoxaemic episodes. The OxyGenie control algorithm was found to be more effective in maintaining oxygen saturation within the target range and preventing hyperoxaemia.

Comparison of neonatal morbidity and mortality between single-room and open-bay care: a retrospective cohort study

Sophie Jansen et al.

Summary: This study showed that transitioning from a traditional open bay neonatal unit to a new single-room unit did not lead to significant improvements in morbidity or mortality outcomes for preterm infants. The only significant association found was a decreased risk of symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus with single-room care. No other independent associations with outcomes were observed.

Increase in treatment of retinopathy of prematurity in the Netherlands from 2010 to 2017

Kasia Trzcionkowska et al.

Summary: Comparing patients treated for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in two consecutive periods in the Netherlands, it was found that in period 2, there was an increase in the number of infants treated according to the ETROP criteria (Type 1), as well as an increase in the number of ROP treatments, retinal detachments, and retreatments. Neonatal data did not provide a definitive explanation for these changes, though shifts in neonatal policy were reported.

Automated oxygen control in preterm infants, how does it work and what to expect: a narrative review

Hylke H. Salverda et al.

Summary: This article provides guidance to clinicians on understanding automated oxygen control systems with different algorithms in contemporary ventilators for preterm infants. The review found that all algorithms show beneficial effects in maintaining oxygen saturation within the target range, reducing hyperoxia and severe hypoxia. While automated oxygen control may lessen workload for bedside staff, there is concern that it could mask clinical deterioration.

The effect of automated oxygen control on clinical outcomes in preterm infants: a pre- and post-implementation cohort study

H. H. Salverda et al.

Summary: The implementation of automated oxygen control as standard of care did not lead to a change in mortality or morbidity during admission. However, infants who received AOC had a shorter duration of invasive ventilation.
