Preparation of innovative eco-efficient composite bricks based on zeolite-poor rock and Hen's eggshell

Jamal Eldin F. M. Ibrahim et al.

Summary: The study investigates the potential of utilizing zeolite-poor rock and eggshells to produce energy-saving ceramic bricks. Results show that adding 20% eggshell to the samples can generate composite bricks with the lowest density and thermal conductivity, while meeting the standard compressive strength requirements. This alternative is a promising and cost-effective option for sustainable development.

High Temperature Degradation Mechanism of Concrete with Plastering Layer

Chihao Liu et al.

Summary: Currently, research on the high temperature degradation of concrete often overlooks the influence of the plastering layer. However, the plastering layer plays a crucial role in mitigating cracking and explosion of concrete at high temperatures. Moreover, using a low water/cement ratio and plastering layer can delay the deterioration of concrete under high temperature conditions.

Water treatment sludge as precursor in non-dehydroxylated kaolin-based alkali-activated cements

J. Manosa et al.

Summary: The cement industry's production growth has led to an increase in CO2 and energy footprint, while the increase in drinking water production at water treatment plants due to population growth has resulted in more waste materials being produced. This research explores using alkali-activated cements (AACs) as a sustainable option to give water treatment sludge a new life cycle, offering properties and sustainability that can compete with ordinary Portland cement (OPC).

Synergistic effect of rice husk, glass and marble sludges on the engineering characteristics of eco-friendly bricks

Muhammad Junaid Munir et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of glass sludge, marble sludge, and rice husk on the physical, mechanical, durability, and thermal properties of brick samples. The results show that the addition of these waste materials reduces shrinkage, weight, and thermal conductivity of the brick samples, making them suitable for moderate weather-resistant environments and reducing landfill waste. The leaching toxicity values of the brick samples are much lower than the specified limits, indicating the potential for sustainable masonry construction with eco-friendly bricks.

Trace metal biogeochemical responses following wood ash addition in a northern hardwood forest

Holly D. Deighton et al.

Summary: The study found that metal concentrations in soil water were not significantly different between treated plots and control plots over the 4 years following a biomass boiler ash addition field trial. The results suggest that industrial wood ash doses below 8 Mg.ha(-1) with trace metal concentrations below Canadian regulatory limits do not increase trace metal mobility or availability in acidic soils of northern hardwood forests during the first 5 years after application.
