Sediment contamination and toxic effects on Violet Goby fish (Gobioides broussonnetii - Gobiidae) from a marine protected area in South Atlantic

Lilian Dalago Salgado et al.

Summary: This study focused on the Estuarine-Lagoon Complex of Iguape-Cananeia in Brazil, exploring the relationship between external levels of contaminants and toxic effects on Gobioides broussonnetii fish. It found higher contamination near urban centers, low to moderate metal concentrations, low PAHs concentrations, and increased PPCPs concentrations due to human activities. The study also revealed that metals and PPCPs were more concentrated during the cold-dry season, while PAHs concentrations were higher in the hot-rainy season, suggesting different influences on fish biology.

Waterborne uranium causes toxic effect and thyroid disruption in zebrafish larvae

Chao Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that uranium can bioaccumulate in zebrafish larvae, resulting in significant developmental toxicities and changes in locomotor activities. Uranium exposure also affects thyroid hormone levels and related gene expression, highlighting the potential toxicities and thyroid disruption of uranium on zebrafish.

Environmental concentrations of antifouling paint particles are toxic to sediment-dwelling invertebrates

Christina Muller-Karanassos et al.

Summary: The study found that modern biocidal antifouling paint particles (APPs) have the potential to adversely affect the health of benthic organisms, particularly the harbour ragworm and the common cockle. Harbour ragworms have higher tolerance to modern APPs, while common cockles are more sensitive. The results highlight the need for stricter regulations on the disposal of APP waste from boatyards and marinas.

Biodegradation of third-generation organic antifouling biocides and their hydrolysis products in marine model systems

Jasper. T. Koning et al.

Summary: The study showed that tolylfluanid can be rapidly removed by biodegradation in marine environments, while dichlofluanid, tralopyril, and medetomidine remained in the system for longer periods of time. The prolonged stability of these biocides could lead to the potential for accumulation in the environment, including the recalcitrant transformation product N,N-DMS from dichlofluanid and tolylfluanid hydrolysis.

Crosstalk of cholinergic pathway on thyroid disrupting effects of the insecticide chlorpyrifos in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Kun Qiao et al.

Summary: The study suggests that chlorpyrifos can induce neurotoxicity and affect thyroid metabolism in zebrafish, including inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, alteration of thyroid hormone levels and gene expression. This effect can be partially reversed by atropine, indicating a potential mechanism for the disturbance of thyroid signaling in zebrafish.

Combined effects of polyethylene and organic contaminant on zebrafish (Danio rerio): Accumulation of 9-Nitroanthracene, biomarkers and intestinal microbiota

Jinghua Zhang et al.

Summary: Microplastics are predicted to act as carriers for organic pollutants, but their carrier role and bio-toxic effects with other pollutants in environments are poorly acknowledged. This study investigated the effects of polyethylene (PE) and 9-Nitroanthracene (9-NAnt) on zebrafish, showing that PE could carry 9-NAnt into fish causing bioaccumulation, but in the case of coexisting exposures, PE reduced 9-NAnt bioaccumulation. The study suggests that microplastics with other emerging pollutants in chronic toxicity are probably next objects in future works.

Toxic effects on bioaccumulation, hematological parameters, oxidative stress, immune responses and neurotoxicity in fish exposed to microplastics: A review

Jun-Hwan Kim et al.

Summary: Exposure to microplastics in aquatic environments leads to bioaccumulation in fish, affecting hematological properties, changing blood physiology, inducing imbalance in reactive oxygen species production and antioxidant capacity, causing oxidative damage, impacting immune responses, and causing neurotoxicity. This study examined various indicators of microplastic toxicity in fish to facilitate the identification of biomarkers following exposure.
